Being fully prepared is crucial before setting off on holiday

Preparing for a holiday can be stressful, and planning and packing inefficiently can only make things worse when you get abroad, according to a travel expert.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, she shared tips that are particularly useful for travellers over the age of 50.

Holidaymakers might not put much thought into the type of suitcase or bag they take, but the wrong one could make getting to your destination more frustrating.

It is vital to choose the right luggage and stock up on essential items like medication, according to travel manager at Dreamport, Maya Kapoor-Miller.

She explained: "As you get older, carrying around heavy suitcases can take too much effort. Therefore, I suggest going for lightweight, yet durable luggage with four wheels for easier movements, as well as packing versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched.

"Comfortable walking shoes are always a must. Be sure to also include travel-sized toiletries, a compact travel pillow, and a smaller bag for walking around and daily excursions.

"If you take regular medication, always pack extra in your carry-on along with a list of your prescriptions."

Following these tips will keep holidaymakers as comfortable as possible when heading to their destination.

Maya added: "Packing light doesn’t mean going away without essentials - it’s about being strategic so your travel experience is more comfortable and less physically demanding."

Once the essentials are packed, it is time to prepare for the rest of your trip. While it may sound obvious, the travel expert said people often sign up for the wrong insurance.

Opting for the cheapest plan can leave you thousands of pounds out of pocket if you do need to claim on the insurance.

She continued: "Travel insurance becomes especially important with age, particularly comprehensive policies that cover pre-existing conditions, emergency medical care, and trip cancellations.

"While it's an extra expense, it can save thousands in the event of an emergency, so I always recommend not skipping it."

Also, keep your documents handy. While many passes and policies are digital now, consider putting them into an online folder.

Maya said: "In addition to insurance, keep physical and digital copies of important documents like your passport, trip itinerary, medical prescriptions, and emergency contacts.

"That will help to reduce stress and ensure you're covered in case of theft, loss, or unexpected changes to your plans. Apps like Google Drive or Dropbox can also be very helpful for storing these documents securely."
