Parts of the country are set to be battered by winds reaching up to 90mph

A total of 10 Met Office weather warnings are coming into force today as Storm Bram makes landfall in the UK.

Britain is set to be battered by winds reaching up to 90mph - with an area stretching from Land's End to John O'Groats all issued various levels of alert.

The first of the warnings - yellow wind and rain alerts - arrived on Monday at 10pm and 6pm respectively.

Those two are set to last into Tuesday afternoon, with two amber rain warnings, warning of "heavy and persistent" downpours, also in place in Wales and Devon and Cornwall from midnight until 10am.

Further north, Lancashire, Cumbria, County Durham and parts of Yorkshire have been hit with a 15-hour-long yellow rain warning, which also began at midnight.

In Northern Ireland, the Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning from 9am to 9pm today.

Then, Scotland is set to endure three wind warnings and one rain warning.

One yellow wind warning applies to the northeast of the country from midday on Tuesday until the same time on Wednesday.

That is accompanied by an amber wind warning - with a "danger to life" alert - from 4pm today until midnight.

Further yellow wind and rain warnings are in place across southeast Scotland, with the former stretching down into northwest England and lasting until 6am on Wednesday.

The Met Office also handed down a message to the whole country - namely that Storm Bram will bring a wet and windy day for all.

"A wet and very windy day in the north, especially for western Scotland, as Storm Bram moves northeast," forecasters say.

"Elsewhere, rain will gradually clear eastwards to sunny spells and isolated showers. A blustery and very mild day for all."

For those areas impacted by the amber wind warnings, Britons have been told to "prepare to protect your property and people from injury".

And in those bracing for the heaviest rain, residents are warned to "keep yourself and others safe; prepare to avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous road conditions".

"If you must travel, ensure you watch for possible danger and drive cautiously," the Met Office added.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill had said earlier: “As we go into Tuesday, there is an area of low pressure that is coming towards us and it looks like tracking across Ireland and northern Ireland and then Scotland.

“It could be particularly deep, and even some inland parts could see some windy and potentially damaging weather.

“We could also get some heavy rain, and with saturated ground, this could cause some issues.”
