The UK will face yellow rain and wind warnings between Sunday and Wednesday

The Met Office has issued five yellow weather warnings over the next four days as gusts look set to hit 70mph during a washout week.

Tuesday will see four weather warnings for wind and rain - stretching from Cornwall to the Outer Hebrides.

Northern Ireland already faces a yellow rain warning today, with downpours leading to disruption across Ulster.

Rainfall could amount to 30mm in places, including in parts of County Down.

Monday's weather warnings suggest Wales and the South West can expect particularly challenging conditions early next week.

A yellow rain warning will impact all of the South West and Wales from 6pm tomorrow and 6pm on Tuesday.

Hampshire and Herefordshire have also been identified as places impacted by the downpours.

A separate wind warning, which suggests gusts could hit 70mph, has been issued from 10pm tomorrow to 4pm on Tuesday.

The wind warning will impact Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly, Plymouth, Somerset, Torbay, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Pembrokeshire, Powys, and Swansea.

However, additional rain and wind warnings will come into force just a few hours later.

The rain warning, which will cover parts of the North East, North West and Yorkshire, has been issued from the early hours of Tuesday morning to 3pm on the same day.

Meanwhile, Scotland's wind warning will remain in place from 3pm on Tuesday to 10am on Wednesday.

The Met Office has warned next week's downpours could see more than half a month's rainfall could hit some parts of the UK in just a 24-hour period.

Chief meteorologist Steven Keates said: "A deepening area of low pressure will approach the UK from the southwest later on Monday, bringing with it heavy rain and strong winds, which are likely to affect the UK between late Monday and early Wednesday.

"The exact track, depth, and timings of this low are uncertain, which makes it harder to determine where will be most impacted by strong winds and/or heavy rain.

"This system has the potential to cause disruption, and severe weather warnings are likely to be issued over the weekend as details become clearer.

"We therefore urge people to keep up-to-date with the latest Met Office forecast."

The weather chaos has already forced Plymouth to cancel its annual Santa Fun Run.

Roger Punch, the event's organiser, said much of the course would be exposed to the bad weather.

He added the "difficult decision" had been taken to cancel the event since "our primary concern is to ensure the safety of all participants".

The Met Office is also warning the weather could prompt travel delays and spark short-term power loss.

Some areas have also been warned that they might face flooding in places.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings," the Met Office said.

The UK's national weather service added: "There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life."
