The train goes past the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct
| GETTYGupta said: "Arguably Britain’s most breathtaking route, the West Highland Line takes you from Glasgow to Mallaig through rugged highlands and shimmering lochs.
"[Don't miss] the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct (the same one featured in Harry Potter). It’s a journey that captures Scotland in just a few hours.
“This route is famous for its dramatic variety of landscapes, one minute you’re passing by deep forests and lochs, the next you’re passing open moorland and wide, empty wilderness."
Britons can choose from two destinations when departing from Glasgow - either Oban in the west of Scotland or Mallaig further north, with the line splitting at Crianlarich.

The journey takes around three hours to Oban and 5.5 hours to Mallaig, with each offering something different. It is worth deciding what you want to see before picking a route.
The travel expert continued: "Travelling over the Glenfinnan Viaduct is a highlight if you’re a Harry Potter fan, but the stretch from Fort William to Mallaig is equally magical, with coastal views and tiny rural stations that feel like they could be frozen in time."
For more Scottish holiday inspiration steeped in history, a clifftop fortress in Aberdeenshire has been crowned the best castle to visit in the UK.
Dunnottar Castle scored an impressive 9.65 out of 10 in a new study that looked at visitor experience and value for money.

Loch Lomond is a highlight of the route
| GETTYThe dramatic ruins perched on rocky cliffs outperformed household names like Windsor and Edinburgh castles, and a trip there is affordable, too.
Dating back to 1276 AD, there is plenty of history to enjoy at the fortress. It offers visitors up to two hours of exploration, priced at £38 for a family of four.
The data resulted in a top 10 list, with three locations located in Scotland. Stirling Castle and Edinburgh Castle were also named among the highlights.
