The UK’s cheapest historical day out has been named - and it’s a stunning Northern Irish landmark perched on the edge of the Atlantic

As more Britons opt for staycations to save money while still enjoying a dose of culture and history, travel experts have shared their pick for the best value historical day out in the UK.

Their top choice, in Northern Ireland, has been hailed as both breathtaking and budget-friendly, offering free entry and dramatic views over the Causeway Coast.

With many families choosing to holiday closer to home, destinations that combine natural beauty and heritage without a hefty price tag are increasingly appealing. According to the experts at GO Outdoors, Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne tick all the right boxes.

And it won't break the bank - "if you want to visit, you only have to pay for parking, making it the most affordable historic day out on our list".

The experts went on to describe the site’s fascinating backstory. They said: “Downhill House was built as a family home for the Earl Bishop in the 18th century.

"However, what remains now are its ruins after a fire in 1851. It did remain in the family until at least 1948, though it was rarely used. During the Second World War, the RAF requisitioned it and, following the war, dismantled it, removing the roof.”

Perched on a cliff above the sea, Mussenden Temple was built by the same Earl as a private library.

They added: "It was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Italy and was given to his cousin’s daughter as a wedding gift. Unfortunately, she died in 1785, two years after the Temple’s completion, and it became her memorial.”

Now maintained by the National Trust, the Temple is recognised as one of Northern Ireland’s most photographed spots. “The temple has become a national landmark.

"According to the National Trust, it’s one of the most photographed places in Northern Ireland. It sits right on the cliff edge at Downhill Demesne and is a stunning piece of architecture.”

Although slightly remote, the experts noted that “if you want to continue exploring, you’ll likely need to drive or get a taxi. However, not too far from Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne is a beach, giving you a chance to relax with the family".

For those seeking history, beauty and unbeatable value, this Northern Irish treasure offers the ultimate staycation day out.

The research found more inspiration for a historical day out, naming the 10 best castles to visit in the UK.

A Scottish clifftop fortress was crowned the best. Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven scored an impressive 9.65 out of 10 in a new study that measured visitor experience and value for money.

The dramatic ruins perched on rocky cliffs outperformed household names like Windsor and Edinburgh castles. Dating from 1276 AD, the fortress offers visitors one to two hours of exploration for £38 for a family of four.
