You've been waiting over a decade for a next Grand Theft Auto, and it looks like the finish line is finally in sight.
Preorders for the next entry in the bestselling franchise, stylised as Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), could be just around the corner. This is the sequel to Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5), which is the biggest-selling entertainment product in history — bringing in $1 billion in revenue since its release in 2013.
Sharp-eyed fans have spotted that unique game codes for GTA 6 have started to pop-up up in the backend of PlayStation's system ahead of its official release date on November 19, 2026. These title IDs are essentially digital fingerprints that identify games on the platform, and they typically show up right before preorders go live.
The discovery comes from X user PlayStation Game Size, a well-known account that tracks behind-the-scenes changes to Sony's store.

I expect we’ll see something about the game soon, probably the start of pre-orders. pic.twitter.com/PBda1Jvr5p
What's particularly notable is that two separate title IDs have been added rather than just one, which isn't typical. Many might assume this means two different editions of the game are coming, but that's probably not the case. Title IDs don't typically work that way. Instead, these codes are usually used to tell apart regional versions of games or to separate physical disc copies from digital downloads.
The specific IDs spotted are 'PPSA01547_00' and 'PPSA29660_00'. Some fans have wondered whether one might be for a standalone game for GTA 6 Online, but developer Rockstar hasn't confirmed anything yet.
The discovery also comes shortly after Strauss Zelnick, CEO of leading game publisher Take-Two dropped a pretty telling hint back in February when chatting with CNBC's Jim Cramer.
"We don't spend money on marketing until we're pretty close to release," he explained, before confirming that "marketing beats coming this summer" is definitely on the cards. This means if the promotional push is about to begin, it suggests Rockstar is confident the game is ready to show off properly.
GTA 6 has also had a pretty big influence on the gaming industry. Popular games like this one can directly impact the release dates of new consoles because hardware manufacturers — like Sony and Microsoft — rely on newer high-profile games to give you more of a reason to upgrade to compatible consoles when they launch, such as the PS5.
Piers Harding-Rolls, a gaming research director at Ampere, currently forecasts new PlayStation and Xbox hardware arriving in late 2027. He speculates that Sony could be tempted to wait until 2028 instead.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Mr Harding-Rolls explains, "Might the console companies be tempted to get more from the current console generation by riding the Grand Theft Auto VI wave and waiting until 2028? The fact that games are now cross-gen makes this less of a factor, perhaps, but such is the size of the GTA franchise, the launch timing will get all areas of the games business thinking about their product strategies."
GTA VI has already been delayed twice, but was originally scheduled for a release last year. Its first trailer was released in early 2025. If you've never played the game before, the Grand Theft Auto franchise is an action-adventure video game series created by DMA Design (now Rockstar North) and published by Rockstar Games. The series is best known for its sprawling cities and crime-driven narratives.

Regardless of when the pre-order date arrives, Take-Two also confirmed that GTA VI remains firmly on track for its expected November 19, 2026 release date on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. They confirmed this in a recent earnings call, putting to rest any lingering worries about further delays.
Analysts are also predicting that this could be one of the biggest releases in gaming history, potentially driving record-breaking sales for the entire industry. For context, Minecraft has sold the most copies in history, totalling over 350,000,000. GTA V trails behind that with more than 225,000,000 copies sold globally.
