Gemini Spark is a 'proactive' AI agent to manage your Gmail, write Google Docs, and make purchases for you

In one example, Google's Gemini Sparks automatically reminds you about an upcoming event where you've promised to bring snacks — recalling details like a nut allergy that you'll need to cater for — from across your Google-branded apps, like Gmail, Google Docs, Google Keep, and others

Google promises that 'high-stakes actions like spending money or sending emails' won't happen automatically

Gemini Spark is a brand-new Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool from Google that wants to be your personal assistant.

Available as part of the existing Gemini app on Android or iOS, as well as the standalone desktop app, Gemini Spark is designed to toil away in the background to solve multi-step queries. It's tied into all of your existing Google services, including Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Docs, so it can pull out information or make edits. Google says Gemini Spark won't take any major actions without consulting you.

For example, you could ask Gemini Spark to trawl through your Gmail to find any upcoming deadlines and put them in a list.

Unlike Google Gemini, there's no need to stick around and wait for the AI to finish its answer. You can lock your smartphone or switch off your laptop, and Gemini Spark will continue working in the background until it's done. Everything is synchronised across devices, so you could set the AI a complex task on your laptop, switch off that device, then check on your smartphone and make some adjustments.

You'll be able to launch new tasks, check-in on repeating tasks, or edit existing ones that are already running in the background 24/7 via on Google Cloud, in an updated version of the desktop Google Gemini app, like this one on macOS shown above

Gemini Spark can perform recurring tasks, like spotting hidden fees in credit card bills every month. You can also daisy-chain multiple tasks together across several apps.

For example, you could ask Gemini Spark to read meeting notes across your chats and emails, bringing relevant information together into a polished report — written by Artificial Intelligence — that is saved in your Google Docs. It can also write the opening lines of an email and attach that Google Doc to the email, so that it's ready to send to anyone who couldn't make the catch-up.

If it works as promised, Gemini Spark promises to be a personal assistant for everyone.

In addition to Google's own apps — Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Google Meet, Google Chat, Tasks, Keep, Google Calendar, Google Sites, and Google Drive — it'll also link with Canva, OpenTable, and Instacart. Google says more partner apps will be announced in the coming weeks.

Google stressed that Gemini Sparks will never perform "high-stakes actions like spending money or sending emails" without checking with you first.

The new agentic AI was unveiled during the Google I/O developer conference, where the Californian firm reveals its upcoming features and functionality to those who build the apps and products that millions of us rely on every day.

Summing up Gemini Spark, Google posted on X: "Give it a task and it works autonomously in the background, even if your phone and laptop are turned off. You choose to turn it on and it's designed to check with you before taking major actions.

Gemini Spark will start to roll-out as a beta for US-based Google AI Ultra subscribers next week. We'd expect Gemini Spark to trickle down to those on more affordable plans, and across other countries, in the coming weeks and months.
