Google has launched a new "simple, affordable" fitness tracker designed to be "comfortable enough to wear 24/7". Dubbed Fitbit Air, this is the first Fitbit-branded device released by Google in almost three years, and it seems to be a direct competitor to the growing popularity of lightweight, screen-less health trackers, like Whoop and Oura Ring.

"Many people find wearable devices to be too bulky, too complicated or too expensive," writes Google Health Head of Product, Andy Abramson, in a blog post announcing the Fitbit Air.

"Fitbit Air is our smallest tracker yet — a proactive wellness partner that uses high-fidelity sensor technology in a tiny, discreet pebble that enables advanced health and fitness tracking like 24/7 heart rate, heart rhythm monitoring with Afib alerts, SpO2, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep stages and duration, and more."

Unlike wearables like Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, and Google's own Pixel Watch 4, which buzz with incoming calls, text messages, and app notifications, trackers like Whoop, Oura Ring, and the incoming Fitbit Air offer insights into your workouts, steps, sleep, heart rate, and more without tethering you to a steady stream of notifications from your other devices.

Google's Andy Abramson explains: "It sits silently on your wrist with a screenless design built so you can live in the moment. You have the freedom to explore deep insights from the Google Health app on your phone when you want them, and stay notification-free when you don’t."

The pill-shaped Fitbit Air will automatically detect when you've started an activity — or you can kickstart a specific workout from your smartphone, or log one after the fact. Tipping the scales at just 5.2g, or 12g if you include a band, this is the lightest Fitbit ever made, measuring 25% smaller than the previous record-holder, Fitbit Luxe.

Fitbit Air has a 7-day battery life and is designed to be worn all-day and night

Despite its diddy 8.3mm size, this lightweight Fitbit can monitor your heart rate all day and night, alerting you if it notices an unusual spike or drop compared to your baseline, or an irregular heart rhythm that could be a sign of atrial fibrillation (also known as AF or AFib).

Google, which acquired Fitbit for £1.5 billion back in early 2021, has fitted this wristworn health tracker with a haptic motor to power "silent" vibration alarms — perfect if you don't want to wake anyone else when it's time to get up. Fitbit Air supports Smart Wake, which aims to wake you during the lightest sleep phase, at some point within a 30-minute window before your set time, so you start the day feeling as refreshed as possible.

Fitbit Air will communicate with your smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0, and the entire design is water resistant up to 50 metres, so you'll be able to keep it on your wrist at the beach or track a swim in the pool.

Google says you should expect a 7-day battery life. There's a red status light that'll alert you when the battery life is starting to dwindle. Google has equipped Fitbit Air with fast-charging support, so you can top up the tracker with a full day of power in just 5 minutes plugged into the wall. You can recharge from 0-100% in 90 minutes.

If you want to use the Fitbit Air alongside other devices, Google lets you swap between a Pixel Watch during the day — so you've got a high-resolution screen for notifications, calls, and other smartwatch tricks — and a Fitbit Air for sleep without missing a beat.

Performance Loop Band is the default strap in the box with the Fitbit Air. It's described in the marketing material as "made from recycled materials, this band is micro-adjustable for a flexible, breathable fit. It comes standard with every Fitbit Air in-box and is available in a variety of shades for a subtle look or pop of colour"

The pebble-smooth Fitbit Air is available with a variety of bands, which can be interchangeable throughout the day. There's a textile Performance Loop band in the box with every Fitbit Air, which is available in Obsidian, Fog, Lavender and Berry. Google's Active Band is a sweatproof silicone band designed specifically for workouts, while the Elevated Modern Band rounds out the initial collection with its bracelet-style design.

Data collected from your lightweight Fitbit Air throughout the day and night will be analysed in the newly revamped Fitbit app, rebranded as Google Health. It supports both Android and iOS users.

If you subscribe to Google Health Premium — previously Fitbit Premium, you'll unlock access to an AI fitness coach who will offer proactive insights into your sleep, fitness, and health data.

The AI can also create tailored fitness plans that adapt to your real-time performance data, as a real-world personal trainer would do. Google's Coach can also summarise medical records. There's also a library of follow-along workouts and mindfulness sessions.

You can manually log extra insights, like Activity, Body fat, Food, Glucose, Hydration, Period, Sleep, Temperature, and Weight. Google has revived friend leaderboards for some competition against other Fitbit and Pixel Watch wearers.

Built with Gemini, the new AI coach inside the Google Health app gives you personalised insights and acts as your fitness coach, sleep expert and health and wellness advisor

Google Health Head of Product adds: "Fitbit Air and the Google Health app make activity tracking seamless. You can start a workout from the app, follow along with a coach-recommended guided workout or simply get going and Fitbit Air will detect and track common activities automatically, sending you a recap of your workout. "The automatic detection gets better over time and is personalised to you.

"And of course, you can log your workouts manually anytime, or with the Google Health Coach you can even snap a photo of your cardio equipment, or the circuit training routine on the whiteboard at the gym.

"Together with Google Health Coach, Fitbit Air is a bridge to a more holistic view of your health and wellness, which takes your health to the next level for personalised guidance."

Google's Fitbit Air is now available to preorder in the UK for £84.99. For a limited time, you'll receive an Active Band Strap of your choice with your new health tracker. It starts to ship later this month.
