It could be released in early 2026

If you've been eyeing a new Apple Mac but are finding the prices to be a bit too steep, you could be in luck.

Apple is reportedly developing its first more affordable MacBook, set to launch in the first half of 2026, according to Bloomberg.

Currently, the lowest-priced Mac is the MacBook Air (2022), which starts at £999. However, prices can climb over the £3,000 mark when you invest in more premium models, such as the MacBook Pro M4 Max (2024).

With the development of this more budget-friendly model, whispers suggest that it could be as low as $599, which roughly equals about £450.

This latest project from Apple could mean the revival of the "netbook". This type of computer, first introduced in the early 00s, was the predecessor class to the M series MacBook Air tier and iPads, but offered at a cheaper price with lower power and storage capabilities.

So, how does the California-based tech firm plan on slashing the cost of its popular laptops?

Reports have said you'll get an iPhone chip powering your laptop — specifically, the A18 Pro processor that can be found in the iPhone 16 Pro. Early testing shows this smartphone chip actually outperforms the M1 processor that powered MacBooks just a few years ago.

In terms of appearance, you could get a display that's slightly smaller than the current 13.6-inch MacBook Air, with a standard LCD screen — so it could be around the size of an iPad Pro, which boasts a 12.9-inch display.

Reports also suggest Apple could offer this MacBook in vibrant shades like blue, pink, and yellow alongside the traditional silver – similar to their colourful iMac range.

This new MacBook would be designed to give you a traditional laptop experience with a built-in keyboard, better battery life, and full macOS capabilities – making it ideal if you want simplicity without compromising on quality. For instance, it could be a good option for students who need a proper laptop for schoolwork, small businesses looking for affordable computers, or everyday users who don't need high-end performance.

However, if you're looking to conduct more power-intensive tasks like detailed video editing, programming, or heavy-duty data processing, then a more premium option, such as the MacBook Pro, may be the better choice.

The possible new pricing strategy could also put MacBook in direct competition with premium Chromebooks, which typically cost between £300 and £500.

This new MacBook could be part of the upcoming 2026 lineup announcement, where many anticipate a new M5-powered MacBook Airs and Pros. Historically, new MacBooks and iPads have been released in the spring each year.
