Sky Glass is a significant departure from Sky TV's traditional line-up. Rather than a set-top box that plugs into your existing television and soundbar, Glass wants to be a one-stop-shop entertainment system. Sky has packed its first custom-designed Smart TV with a QLED panel with a 4K Ultra HD resolution, support for HDR, and a Dolby Atmos soundbar.
There's also a far-field microphone array for hands-free control — handy if you're always losing your remote control down the back of the sofa.
As a result of everything squeezed into this all-in-one package, Sky Glass has a boxier design than a traditional flatscreen. Also setting it apart from the competition is the array of colours, including the pastel Dusky Pink, and vibrant Ocean Blue and Racing Green. There's also a plain white, Ceramic White, and the traditional Anthracite Black that you'll find from almost every other telly manufacturer.
Alongside Sky Stream, the all-in-one Sky Glass drops the requirement for a satellite dish to enjoy everything on offer from Sky TV. Using just Wi-Fi or a wired internet connection, you'll be able to stream live television channels in up to 4K Ultra HD quality. You can still pause and rewind live television — a feature pioneered by Sky+ in the early 00s.
Dropping the need for a satellite dish makes this new kit particularly advantageous for renters, or those living in high-rise apartments without a communal dish, as it eliminates the need for intrusive installations. Setup is as simple as plugging in a single power cable and following the on-screen instructions to connect Wi-Fi. And that's it.
Whatever colourway you choose for your Sky Glass TV, you'll be sent a colour-matched remote control with backlit keys and a microphone for voice commands

It's this simplicity that ensure that Sky TV doesn't need to schedule an engineer appointment when you place an order. With next-day delivery available as standard across all Sky Glass TVs, this time tomorrow you could already be watching on your 4K QLED TV.
With the introduction of Glass, Sky created an entirely new software platform, dubbed EntertainmentOS. As well as more modern user interface, the engineers did a truckload of work under-the-bonnet to ensure software updates could be deployed much faster than on Sky Q, which often langiushed without new streaming apps or regular features. It took seven years for Channel 4 to support that satellite box.
Sky regularly updates EntertainmentOS with new designs, extra features, and voice commands related to some of the biggest shows. EntertainmentOS received 300 updates in a single year in 2023.
One of the biggest shake-ups in the transition from the more traditional Sky Q box and the all-new Sky Glass is Playlist, which replaces My Recordings. Since there's no onboard storage built into Sky Glass TVs or Sky Stream, Playlist functions more like My List on Netflix.
When you add a show, documentary, or film to Playlist, it will be stored in the menu to be streamed at a later date. You can set-up individual profiles for everyone in your household, so that everyone gets their own Playlist. As soon as a new title is added, Sky Glass will automatically scour on-demand catalogues from all of your streamers to find previously aired episodes in case you want to catch up.
For example, if you add an episode of Grey's Anatomy on Sky Witness and you've signed into Disney+ on the set-top box — you'll find every episode ready to binge-watch in the menu.
Playlist brings together TV shows, documentaries, and films from the TV Guide, on-demand catalogue included with the Sky Entertainment bundle, and titles from Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, and others into a single list — that's automatically sorted into categories
SKY TV PRESS OFFICE
Since Playlist isn't simply recording upcoming shows from the TV Guide, there's no limit to how many shows can be added, since you're never going to run out of storage. There's no need to worry about clashes in the TV Guide either, you can record dozens of shows that will broadcast at the same time.
And it's not simply limited to Sky TV content either. If you're signed into streamers like Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+, and Disney+, you can add films and TV series exclsuive to these apps into Playlist too. EntertainmentOS software will use of this activity to intelligently suggest new shows, documentaries, and films based on your viewing habits from all of these services too.
The disadvantage of this approach? Since none of these shows, films, or fixtures are being physically recorded onto a spinning hard-drive — as happens with the older Sky Q box — catching-up on content listed in Playlist means you're at the mercy of the licence agreement with the streamers.
For example, while you can keep dozens of episodes of Match of the Day on the hard drive built into your Sky Q box, because of the unique agreement between the BBC and the Premier League, the previous episode will vanish as soon as the next instalment is broadcast or after a seven-day window, whichever comes first. As such, you won't have more than a single episode of Match of the Day to catch-up on with Glass.
With Sky Live connected, you can watch shows, sports fixtures, and films at the same time as friends and family — anyone can pause the action for everyone, so you won't miss a thing and will see everyone's reactions in real-time. You can chat via the built-in microphones inside the Sky Live camera

If you want to expand Sky Glass beyond a content consumption gadget, there's the optional Sky Live camera, which attaches magnetically to the top of the television. This 4K camera brings interactivity to the viewing experience, letting you host Zoom meetings from the comfort of the living room, with AI-powered technology ensuring you're always framed perfectly at the centre of the screen.
Sky Live also allows for shared viewing experiences, so friends and family across the country can watch shows or sporting events together in real-time, sharing reactions as if they were in the same room. Sky has also packed several motion-controlled games, as well as the at-home fitness software Mvmnt. This fitness app, co-developed with leading experts, even provides real-time feedback on your exercise form.
Since everything is beamed to your Sky Glass box via Wi-Fi or ethernet, you'll need a decent internet connection to watch live and on-demand television. The minimum requirement for Sky Glass is 25Mbps — this is largely due to the fact that all live television and on-demand boxsets offered with the Glass TV are availabe in 1080p High Definition as standard.
The average broadband speed nationwide, as measured by Ofcom, sits at 69Mbps, so most people should have enough bandwidth to watch Sky Stream in HD. If you want to stream in 4K Ultra HD, the minimum speed requirement increases to 30Mbps.
Sky TV recommends a minimum broadband speed of 30Mbps if you want to add multi-room support with an Sky Stream puck for another television in your house. This is will increase for each Stream puck you add to other rooms.
Until May 2023, Sky recommended a minimum download speed of just 11Mbps for Sky Stream, rising to 25Mbps for 4K UHD picture quality. However, the broadcaster decided to change these recommended speeds in the small print of its website last year. It's unclear why the change was made.
Since your Smart TV is completely centred around Sky TV, you're probably wondering what happens if you decide to ditch your Sky Entertainment package to save money. The good news is that Glass TVs will continue to work as a normal TV.
Yes, without an ongoing Sky Entertainment subscription, Sky Glass will work like a normal Smart TV.
Sky Glass is fitted with a TV aerial input, so you can connect it like any Freeview-powered Smart TV. This will unlock all of the same free-to-air channels, which can be accessed from the same menu. You'll still benefit from the latest software updates from Sky TV and can use streamers like Disney+, ITVX, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Netflix, Apple TV+, and others by signing-in with your existing logins.
Sky Glass has HDMI inputs too, so you can switch to a games console, or other standalone kit... just like a usual television.
Sky Glass supports streaming services such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, Paramount+, as well as catch-up apps like BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5 out-of-the-box with no need to visit an app store

Exactly like those who decide to scrap their monthly subscription to Sky Entertainment, if you lose internet in your home, Sky Glass will continue to work, but you'll be restricted to the live channels and radio transmitted over the back-up TV aerial input. Without an aerial connected, Sky Glass won't be able to stream live or on-demand content without an active Wi-Fi or wired broadband connection.
