Spurs fans will be celebrating long into the night after watching their team lift a European trophy, bringing to an end a barren spell that has frustrated supporters for nearly two decades.
The decisive moment came just before half-time when Brennan Johnson scored what proved to be the winning goal.
The build-up was straightforward, with Pape Matar Sarr delivering what appeared to be a simple cross into the Manchester United penalty area.
Despite being surrounded by three United defenders, the Welsh international managed to make contact with the ball.
His effort was hardly threatening, but it took a crucial deflection off Luke Shaw's arm.
The ball then trickled past a rooted Andre Onana in the United goal, sending the Spurs supporters behind the goal into wild celebrations.
The match was not without its moments of tension, particularly between Harry Maguire and Cristian Romero.

At one point, Maguire fired a dig at the Tottenham defender who was on the ground after clashing with Rasmus Hojlund.
"You're the captain, come on!" Maguire told the Argentine, who was holding his hands over his face. The United centre-half appeared to mock the World Cup winner as he remained on the turf.
Even in the early minutes of the second half, the two defenders continued exchanging verbal barbs, though Romero had the upper hand with his team leading the final.
United enjoyed plenty of possession after the break but struggled to make it count, failing to truly test Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario despite him looking shaky at times.

The victory represents a momentous occasion for Tottenham, who last lifted silverware in 2008 when they defeated Chelsea to win the League Cup.
Maguire had been instrumental in United's journey to the final, scoring a dramatic winner in the quarter-finals as part of an incredible comeback against their French opponents.
However, it was Tottenham's night in Bilbao as they finally secured a trophy after what has been a painfully long wait for their supporters.
