Arsenal were furious after giving away a penalty in controversial circumstances

Paris Saint-Germain scorned the chance to double their lead against Arsenal on the night after a shocking penalty from Vitinha.

But the decision came about in controversial circumstances after VAR intervened out of nowhere.

After Achraf Hakimi shot on goal, which was saved by David Raya, the game continued for some time before VAR told the referee to go to the pitchside monitor.

Even the fans inside the Parc des Princes were confused as TV replays showed the ball take a slight nick of Myles Lewis-Skelly's hand from Hakimi's shot.

However, that slight touch of the defender's fingers was enough for the referee to award a penalty to PSG.

It was a massive chance for the French champions to put one foot in the Champions League final after Fabian Ruiz had put them ahead earlier in the match.

But the Portugal international's weak effort was saved easily by David Raya, as Gunners legend Martin Keown vented on TNT Sports.

He said before the penalty: "Not a single player on the pitch appeals. This is where VAR spoils it. It has been a fantastic contest but to finish the game and the tie in this way, it's ridiculous."

After the penalty was saved, he said: "Justice is served. He gets down brilliant, he has to guess right."

However, Arsenal did not take advantage as PSG came forward again moments later - this time with more success.

A low cross should have been dealt with by Thomas Partey but Hakimi stole in to take the ball off the midfielder.

And all in the same movement, the Morocco international netted an outrageous strike past Raya.

It saw PSG go 3-0 up on aggregate, having won the first leg 1-0 at the Emirates.

However, the drama continued as the Gunners suddenly woke up as the Parc des Princes noise level reached that of a jumbo jet.

Leandro Trossard delivered a ball into the box that was not well defended, with Bukayo Saka pouncing to put the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Never say never in the Champions League, especially after the fireworks served up by Barcelona and Inter Milan on Tuesday night.

But Saka missed an absolute sitter just moments later that would have seen Arsenal go 2-2 on the night.

With the goal at his mercy, the England international put his effort over the crossbar from just a few meagre yards out - with Donnarumma at sea.
