Liverpool have completed their first signing of the summer

Liverpool have announced the signing of Jeremie Frimpong, who becomes the club's first signing of the summer in what promises to be a busy transfer window.

It comes just hours after news broke that the Reds had clinched a phenomenal deal to sell Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid for £10million - despite his contract expiring at the end of next month.

Frimpong had long been the preferred target to replace Alexander-Arnold, who had been linked with a free transfer to Real Madrid from last summer.

The Dutchman joins from Bayer Leverkusen for £30m - just £20m more than the fee Real Madrid have paid for a player with a month left on his contract.

Frimpong was a key part of the Leverkusen side to win the Bundesliga in 2023/24 under coach Xabi Alonso, who has been announced as the new Real boss.

The wing-back played an attacking role on the right-hand side and scored 14 goals across Bayer's title-winning campaign, where they finished season unbeaten in the league.

Frimpong said: “It went quite easy. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer.

“For me, it was like, ‘Whatever you guys do, just get this done’, [speaking to] my agents: ‘Just get this done.’

“Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.

“I’m just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won’t let you guys down and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”

Last season, Frimpong scored five times in 48 appearances but has still been looked at as one of the best attacking right-backs in Europe.

The 24-year-old started his career out at Manchester City, where he came up through the youth academy before Celtic snapped him up in 2019.

At Parkhead, the Netherlands international made 51 appearances across 18 months before joining Leverkusen in the 2021 January transfer window.

Liverpool are expected to splash the cash this summer in what looks like will be a very busy transfer window.

With Frimpong already confirmed, the Premier League champions are moving quickly to land his old Bayer team-mate Florian Wirtz.

The playmaker is seen as one of the hottest talents in Europe and Liverpool have moved ahead of Bayern Munich and Manchester City for his signature.

A jaw-dropping £110m offer has been submitted for the 22-year-old, who would be a club-record signing should a deal get over the line.

But Liverpool are planning more transfers, with Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez also heavily linked.

After a deal is completed for Wirtz, the club are expected to ramp up their efforts to land the Hungary international.

The plan is to get all three players signed by the end of June, giving Arne Slot a clear idea of his squad ahead of pre-season.
