The incident occurred after West Ham's 3-2 defeat to Wolves in the Carabao Cup

Jarrod Bowen has apologised to West Ham fans after he was involved in a verbal altercation following their 3-2 loss against Wolves on Tuesday evening.

The West Ham icon was applauding the away support after the Hammers lost their third consecutive game of the campaign, when a fan appeared to hurl abuse at the 28-year-old.

Bowen seemed to ask the fan to come to the edge of the pitch, and in failing to do so he was prepared to enter the stands.

The ugly scenes follow another West Ham capitulation, as they squandered a 2-1 lead against Wolves due to two late Jorgen Strand Larsen efforts.

Bowen has since taken to his Instagram story to apologise to fans.

"Apologies to the fans for tonight's reaction," he wrote. "I'm someone who is passionate and will fight every time I step on the pitch.

"But I need to set a better example and you fans know how much i love you and the club! We ride through the bad times together and I'll see you all Sunday."

The defeat marks another dark day for West Ham this season.

Graham Potter's side have already tasted defeat in their opening two Premier League games, leading to tensions with the fans boiling over.

And fans have taken their frustrations to social media, with one fan despairing: "Personally attacking our best and most loyal player Jarrod Bowen isn't the way forward West Ham fans."

Another fumed: "Bowen tries to jump into the crowd to confront a fan must of said something personal gets pulled away from Soucek then rips the captains armband off wouldn't surprise me if he decides to call it a day!!"

A third proclaimed: "Bowen losing his head and having to be held back by Soucek from arguing with a fan in the away end just about sums where West Ham United are at as a football club right now.

"Bowen is the last person to be blaming for this mess, but it also isn’t a good look from our captain."

A fourth concluded another worrying night for the Hammers: "If I'm Bowen I'll had a transfer request him Paqueta deserves better than this s*** I don't think anyone can save us."

The incident tops another disastrous night for Graham Potter's side, who is under an increasing amount of pressure.

The Hammers fell to a woeful 3-0 defeat to newly-promoted side Sunderland on the opening weekend of the season, and followed it up with a 5-1 battering by Chelsea at the London Stadium.

On the night, it didn't seem to be ending that way.

The Hammers entered half-time 1-0 down after a late strike from winger Rodrigo Gomes.

Potter's side came out in the second period fighting, with midfielders Souček and Lucas Paqueta putting the east London side ahead.

But Newcastle target Jorgen Strand Larsen showed his credence in a Wolves shirt, as he bagged two late goals to turn the tie on its head once more, condemning the Hammers to another defeat. They are yet to taste victory so far this season.

The post-match incident regarding talisman Bowen will concern West Ham supporters.

The England international has been a star player at the London Stadium since his arrival, scoring 74 goals in 241 appearances for the club.

With the club already struggling for form, losing their top goalscorer could leave the squad in tatters.
