Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to Diogo Jota after the Liverpool star's tragic death at the age of 28.

The Portugal international was involved in a fatal accident in on the A52 near Palacios de Sanabria in the province of Zamora and sadly passed away, alongside his brother Andre.


Liverpool have since confirmed Jota's tragic death, with the club saying they're 'devastated'.

Their statement read: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

"We will continue to provide them with our full support."

Ronaldo, who is captain of the Portugal national team, has now released an emotional statement of his own mourning the death of his former team-mate.

Writing on X, the 40-year-old shared a black and white image of his friend and said: "It doesn't make sense.

"Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married.

"To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world.

"I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you."

Jota won two trophies alongside Ronaldo for Portugal.

They were part of the side that won the Nations League in 2019, while the duo also helped the country retain that title earlier this summer.

Jota's other honours include the Premier League title, FA Cup and EFL Cup - which were all won during his time at Liverpool.

The Portugal Football Federation have paid tribute to the forward. They said: "The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, this morning, in Spain.

"Much more than an outstanding player, with nearly 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all colleagues and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community.

"The Portuguese Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players respectively played.

"The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to hold a minute of silence, this Thursday, before our National Team’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship.

"We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese Football, and we will do everything to honor their legacy daily."

"Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten.

"Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre.

"You will be truly missed, and always remembered."
