Tributes to the footballer have poured in on social media

Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28, with the Liverpool star tragically passing away after a car crash in Spain.

The Portugal international, who helped the Reds win the Premier League title last term, was involved in a fatal accident on the A52 near Palacios de Sanabria in the province of Zamora.


Marca reported the incident and emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash.

A statement read: "The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.

"1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.

"From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene."

The news come just weeks after Jota had married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children.

Heartbreakingly, Jota had taken to social media on Wednesday to look back on the special day.

In an Instagram post uploaded 18 hours ago, Jota shared footage from the wedding that showed him, Cardoso and other guests dancing into the night.

He accompanied the post with a caption that read: "A day we will never forget."

Earlier in the week, Jota had also shared some snaps from the couple's special dauy.

"June 22, 2025. Yes to forever," he'd wrote.

Football fans have been left saddened by the news, which is made all the more tragic following his recent wedding.

One user wrote: "This Jota news is heart breaking .. feel absolute sick right now … shows you how precious life is .. thoughts with his family & friends."

A second paid tribute by saying: "RIP Diogo Jota. Truly heartbreaking. Prayers for his family and friends. We have to stand with them and support them during this tragic time."

Another wrote: "Life is crazy scary. RIP Diogo Jota."

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has also reacted.

Writing on X, he said: "The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honored Portugal's name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic.

"I extend my deepest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports."

The Portuguese national football team have said they are 'devastated' by Jota's death.

They added that he 'was not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his team-mates and opponents'.
