The duo were involved in a fatal accident on the A52 near Palacios de Sanabria in the province of Zamora.

"From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene."

Jota was reportedly travelling with his brother, Andre, at the time.

Andre has died too, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking for their family and fans across the world.

Andre played for F.C. Penafiel, who currently compete in the second division of Portuguese football.

A midfielder by trade, he netted 12 goals throughout his career while making 105 appearances.

As for Jota, the Liverpool star started his career with Pacos de Ferreira in his homeland.

After stints with Atletico Madrid and Porto, he then joined Wolves on loan for the 2017-2018 Championship season.

Having flourished during his time at Molineux, the transfer was made permanent - with Jota spending two years with Wolves before leaving for Liverpool in 2020.

He scored 65 goals in 182 games for the Merseyside outfit, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup along the way.

The Portugal Football Federation have now confirmed the deaths of Jota and Andre. Their statement read: "The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, this morning, in Spain.

"Much more than an outstanding player, with nearly 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all colleagues and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community.

"The Portuguese Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players respectively played.

"The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to hold a minute of silence, this Thursday, before our National Team’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship.

"We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese Football, and we will do everything to honor their legacy daily."

Porto, one of Jota's former clubs, have also issued a statement paying tribute to both the 28-year-old and Andre - who was once on their books as a youngster.

"FC Porto is in mourning," they said.
