GB News senior sports reporter Callum Vurley blasts the latest decision to call up Ben White after his controversial past with the England squad

Once again, the powers that be in English football seem determined to reward petulance over patriotism.

The latest farce? The international recall of Benjamin White, a player who - let’s not forget - walked away from his country during the 2022 World Cup.

Not injured. Not sidelined. Not unfairly dropped. No, he simply turned his back and went home.

And now we’re supposed to welcome him back with open arms?

This is more than just a footballing decision. It’s a question of standards, of what it means to represent your country.

For generations, wearing the England shirt has been the pinnacle, an honour players would fight tooth and nail for.

Think of the pride, the sacrifice, the sheer determination. Now? It seems optional. Conditional. Convenient.

Let’s be absolutely clear: millions of fans would give anything to see their nation compete at a World Cup. Players are custodians of that dream.

When one decides, for whatever reason, that he’s above it, that he can simply opt out when the mood doesn’t suit - there must be consequences.

But instead, what do we see? A quiet rehabilitation. A shrug of the shoulders. “Oh well, he’s a good player.” Since when did technical ability trump commitment?

And let’s not pretend this exists in a vacuum. Football, like any institution, runs on culture. Standards slip not all at once, but inch by inch.

One exception becomes two, two become ten, and before long the badge itself risks meaning less than it once did. That should concern anyone who cares about the long-term integrity of the national side.

What message does this send to the rest of the squad? To the young players coming through the ranks? That loyalty is negotiable? That you can pick and choose your moments of national duty like a fixture in a congested club calendar? That if things get uncomfortable, you can simply step away and expect a warm welcome upon return?

It’s not good enough.

Of course, there will be those who argue for forgiveness. Football, they’ll say, is about moving forward. But forgiveness without accountability is weakness.

If representing England is to mean anything at all, it must come with responsibility, and yes, consequences for those who walk away.

And where, exactly, is that accountability here? A quiet conversation behind closed doors? A vague assurance that “lessons have been learned”?

Fans are expected to accept this without explanation, without transparency, and without any real sense that standards are being upheld.

This isn’t about grudges. It’s about principles.

Because if pulling on that shirt no longer demands absolute commitment, if the ultimate honour in English football can be treated as optional, then what exactly are we celebrating when the anthem plays?

England deserves better. The fans deserve better. And frankly, so do the players who never once considered turning their backs when their country needed them most.
