The alleged assault reportedly happened at around 2am in Richmond

Two Brentford first-team players sustained injuries after stepping in to assist a man who was reportedly subjected to a racially motivated attack in Richmond during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The footballers, whose identities have not been disclosed, were witnessed with blood on them following the confrontation on Queen's Road at approximately 2am.

According to The Telegraph, the pair intervened when they came across the alleged victim being assaulted in the south-west London area.

The incident occurred as the players made their way home following their club's goalless Premier League encounter against Leeds at Elland Road.

The players had been permitted to arrange their own transport from the Yorkshire venue rather than travelling with the team, which is how they came to be in Richmond in the middle of the night.

Their journey back to London was interrupted when they encountered the alleged assault taking place on Queen's Road.

Reports indicate the attack on the victim was racially motivated, prompting the two footballers to rush to his aid.

The match at Elland Road had ended in a stalemate, with Keith Andrews' side securing a point that keeps them in contention for European qualification this season.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed officers responded to the scene following reports of the assault. A spokesman for the force stated: "Police attended a report of an assault on Queen's Road, Richmond at around 02:00hrs on Sunday, 22 March.

"Officers engaged with the victim. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time."

Enquiries into the incident remain active, with detectives continuing to gather evidence about what transpired during the early morning altercation.

No suspects have yet been apprehended in connection with the alleged racially motivated attack that prompted the intervention from the Premier League players.

Despite being left bloodied according to eyewitnesses at the scene, both players were reported to be in full health by later on Sunday and did not require any medical treatment for their injuries.

The timing of the incident coincides with the start of the international break, during which players across the league will depart to represent their respective national teams.

Brentford currently occupy seventh position in the Premier League standings, sitting level on points with Everton below them and trailing Chelsea by just two points.

Should they maintain their current position, the west London club would secure European football for the forthcoming campaign.
