Spain's former king, Juan Carlos, has denied that he had an affair with Princess Diana, describing her as "cold and taciturn" in a bombshell new memoir.

In his unreleased memoir, Juan Carlos, the disgraced former monarch, said nothing happened between him and Diana during the Princess of Wales's visits to his summer home in Majorca.

He described Diana as "cold, taciturn, distant, except in the presence of the paparazzi" in readings due to be published next week.

Royal watchers speculated whether Juan Carlos seduced the princess at the Marivent Palace, the Spanish royal family's summer home.

Diana accompanied the then Prince Charles, alongside their children William and Harry, on three consecutive summer visits between 1986 and 1988.

Juan Carlos is believed to have had relations with multiple women outside of his marriage to the then Queen Sofia, including affairs with numerous Spanish actresses.

His relationship with Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn played a significant role in his decision to abdicate in 2014 in favour of his son Felipe VI after the affair came to light.

Diana never discussed the rumours publicly, although she was believed to have found him "a little too attentive".

The princess's biographer, Andrew Morton, quoted Diana calling the former king "a very libidinous man".

According to Mr Morton's book, Ladies of Spain, she told friends after a visit to Majorca: "I felt uncomfortable being left alone with him in a room, although I can assure you that nothing happened."

Juan Carlos left Spain and moved to Abu Dhabi in 2020 following his financial and tax affairs being investigated by prosecutors in Spain's supreme court.

Eventually, no charges were brought forward after the former king made large payments of more than €5million (£4.4million).

Juan Carlos claimed his move to Abu Dhabi was to improve the image of Spain's royal household and help Felipe VI.

The former king told Le Figaro: "To help my son, I looked for a place where journalists from my country couldn't easily find me.

"The last time a Spanish journalist came, the local authorities threw him in jail. I had to intervene to have him released."

Spanish authorities are preparing public events to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of the dictator Francisco Franco on November 20.

General Franco picked Juan Carlos as his successor, with the young king inheriting absolute power in 1975 before transitioning to a democracy that led to free elections in 1977.

Despite his pivotal role in shaping Spain's democracy, Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez have yet to announce whether Juan Carlos can attend the celebrations.

Juan Carlos claimed he wrote his memoirs to earn what he considered his rightful place in Spain's history.

The former king said: "Democracy didn't just fall from the sky."
