Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8 2022

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have announced they will both attend this year's Invictus Games - which falls just one day after the first anniversary of the late Queen's death.

The Sussexes will attend the event, which is a Paralympic-style event for servicemen and women, in Düsseldorf in September.

The contest will take place between September 9 and 16 and will be the couple's first appearance together in public for a number of months.

It comes after the royal couple appeared together for a video clip on their Archewell Foundation website.

The clip saw the Duke and Duchess congratulate members of the The Archewell Foundation on their award as members of the Youth Power Fund advisory committee.

It has been claimed Meghan will moderate a farewell show for families and competitors on the last day of the Games, according to German newspaper, Rheinische Post.

It will reportedly be a "very emotional" occasion, with claims Harry will give the closing speech.

Harry and Meghan both attended the sporting event last year where they met with a number of officials and potential competitors, as well as members of the athletes' friends and family.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The joint appearance is set to be the couple's first since they attended the Women in Vision Award's in New York back in May.

They claimed to have been involved in a "near catastrophic car chase" after the event.

A spokesman for Harry and Meghan said the pair - alongside Meghan's Mum Doria Ragland - "were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi".

The competition also marks the first official time Harry and Meghan were spotted together.

It is claimed that Harry is now planning to film a series surrounding the contest for Netflix.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight last month, a Netflix spokesperson said: "Our exciting journey with them [Harry and Meghan] isn't ending anytime soon.

"We're currently collaborating on numerous projects, including the much-anticipated documentary series Heart of Invictus."
