The Grade II-listed Forest Lodge is now set to become their primary residence, with the relocation will take them a short distance from their current four-bedroom home at Adelaide Cottage, where the family has resided since 2022.

The couple are believed to be personally financing both the property and all renovation work, avoiding any additional expense to taxpayers.

Unlike previous royal renovations, the Wales family will maintain their approach of having no live-in staff at their new residence.

Planning documents indicate that minor internal and external improvements have already commenced at the 328-year-old property, The Sun reported.

An insider revealed the family's motivation for the move, stating: "Windsor has become their home. However, over the last few years while they have lived at Adelaide Cottage there have been some really difficult times."

The source explained that the relocation offers the royals "an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter; an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind."

“This is a move for the long-term. They see it as their forever home,” they told The Sun.

The historic lodge underwent extensive restoration work in 2001, preserving original features including stonework, ornate plaster cornices, marble fireplaces and Venetian windows.

The property was subsequently available for rental at £15,000 monthly, with the freehold remaining under King Charles's ownership.

The Princess of Wales has reportedly been observed selecting furnishings for their new residence, including a dining table that seats 24 guests.

The family will retain their existing properties at Anmer Hall in Norfolk and Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace.

As Duke of Cornwall, William inherited an estate valued at over £1 billion when his father ascended to the throne.

Their time time at Adelaide Cottage coincided with particularly challenging events, including the death of Queen Elizabeth shortly after their 2022 arrival.

Both the Princess of Wales and King Charles subsequently received cancer diagnoses during this period.

It had previously been suggested that the nearby Fort Belvedere was a top choice for the family's next home.
