In today's GB News Daily Reflection, we compare humanity’s uncertainty about death to Europeans before Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic.
Jesus Christ, through his resurrection at Easter, revealed that death is not the end but a passage to eternal life beyond it.
“Imagine it's the year 1480 and you live on the west coast of Ireland. On a clear day, as you look out to sea. You wonder if there's anything out there beyond the horizon. Another land, perhaps a far-off country.
“But how could you know? Someone would have to go there, come back, and tell you about it. Well, in 1492, Christopher Columbus did exactly that.
“He crossed the ocean and brought back news of the Americas. We don't like thinking about death, but when we do, we often think about it in the same way as we once thought about the Atlantic.
“Who knows what's on the far side of that ocean we all have to cross? Is there another Columbus who's been there and come back?
“Well, I'm a vicar, and we're in a church, so you probably know what I'm going to say next. As we get closer to Easter, we'll remember that the Easter story doesn't end on Good Friday with the death of Jesus, but on Easter Sunday with his resurrection.
“For Christians, Jesus is that Columbus who went into death for our sake and came back to show us that it's not the end.
“There is another place, a life after life. And when our time comes, he invites each of us to let him show us the way.”
