In today's GB News Daily Reflection, we recall one of the earliest stories in the Bible, the tale of the Tower of Babel.
"Humans arrogantly attempted to build a literal stairway to heaven. Yet another attempt to play God. And it didn't go well. God disrupted the project, causing everyone to speak in different languages so that no one could be understood. There was quite literally babbling.
"Now, in many ways, humans have lived in echo chambers ever since. But God's plan was always for this curse to be reversed, for fragmented humanity to be made whole again. One of Israel's ancient prophets, Joel, foresaw it.
"Joel spoke of a day when God would pour out his spirit on all people, men and women, old and young alike. In that day, there would be dreams and visions not fixated on Project Self, but on God and His ways.
"Many centuries later, Joel's words came to pass and were quoted by Saint Peter on the day of Pentecost, when fire and wind fell and the church was born in an age more divided than ever. God's heart is for unity, not a unity of tribal identities, but a unity inspired by a common vision and a shared identity that is rooted in Jesus.
:Joel must have doubted if such a future was possible. Maybe we do too. But Pentecost shows us what seems impossible for humanity alone becomes a reality when God's Spirit moves among us."
