In today's daily reflection, we learn one of the two Christian saints that give their name to this Church is Mary, the mother of Jesus.
"We often dwell on her story at Christmas, but today is the point in the Church's year when we celebrate the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary, heralding news of her miraculous pregnancy. Nine months to the day before Christmas.
"Now, Christmas, perhaps rightly, attracts all the noise and celebration, but it is worth remembering that God's great rescue mission begins here, without fanfare, in the quietness, the stillness, and in the humble, obedient response of a young girl nobody had heard of.
"In my experience, God can sometimes speak as if through a megaphone, and it's deafening.
"But at other moments he comes as the still small voice, the whisper in the silence, the unexpected word to the unassuming soul. How are we to respond?"
