Scrapping council tenants’ right to buy their homes would be an “anti-aspirational” move, according to the Shadow Exchequer to the Treasury.

Gareth Davies told GB News: “It seems quite anti-aspirational to me, and a bit contradictory, given that she [Housing Secretary Angela Rayner] herself benefited from the scheme.

“I thought Labour wanted people to own their own homes and yet they're taking away a policy that allows them to do just that.

“In fact, constituents have raised this with me as a concern and when I first heard it, I didn't believe that it was true, but apparently it is true. We'll look very carefully at what they're proposing.

“I’ve not seen any detail come out yet, but clearly it seems very anti-aspirational to me.

“They should be focused on building more homes to enable younger people and people across the country to have a stake in our economy, have a roof under their head that they actually own themselves and this Right to Buy scheme has been successful in doing that over many years.”

Davies also criticised new restrictions on supplying arms to Israel: “In government, we were very clear that we wanted to get the hostages out of Gaza.

“We wanted to get aid into Gaza and work with international allies to bring an end to this incredibly tragic conflict in the Middle East.

“Israel is a key ally of ours and we've always supported them in the defence of their people and the defence of the country in the face of a terrible terrorist attack on 7 October.

“I just question this action because not only the timing of it, on the day that Israel buried six of their hostages who were murdered by Hamas, but also the in-part nature of the embargo.

“We are already a limited exporter to Israel and this is a partial embargo, and so I just question the rationale behind it.

“I think Labour need to come out with more information, as much information as they can provide, to clarify what led to this decision.”
