Should the Government give more power to Britain's local politicians? Have your say in the comments section below

Thousands of Britons took to the polls yesterday to do their civic duty and vote for who they think should lead in their local areas.

Sir Keir Starmer’s party faced a twin challenge of council and mayoral elections across England in what is largely being considered the party's first electoral test since taking power last July.

Starmer said voters faced a clear choice between Labour politicians “working together to bring change to Britain” or “chaos and division with parties who have no plan for change”.

However, as part of Labour's plans announced by Angela Rayner in the English devolution White Paper in December, the Government could expand its plans to give local politicians more power and create more upper-tier unitary councils.

Under the plan, these would cover large interconnected populations of at least 500,000, replacing existing structures in two-tier county areas.

The Government argued that these new large councils, since labelled “super councils”, can deliver “better outcomes for residents” and “save significant money which can be reinvested in public services”, as well as create the basis of structures for devolving powers to combined authorities under mayors.

With that being said, do you think the Government should give more power to Britain's local politicians? Vote now in the poll below and have your say in the comments.
