John McEnroe expressed his displeasure at the sight of both Wimbledon women's finalists wearing headphones as they prepared for their Centre Court appearance on Saturday.

The American tennis legend took issue with Iga Swiatek and Amanda Anisimova's pre-match routines ahead of their maiden SW19 final.

Speaking during the BBC's coverage before moving to commentary duties, McEnroe suggested the players were not fully appreciating the significance of the occasion.

He observed that both competitors had chosen to listen to music through their respective devices whilst preparing to enter tennis's most prestigious stage.

"They shouldn't allow them to wear airpods or headphones because you have got to get them to enjoy this instead of playing some music," McEnroe declared. "Come on now ladies!"

The seven-time Grand Slam champion's frustration was evident as he advocated for a complete prohibition on such devices before finals matches.

Anisimova had been spotted wearing AirPods in the tunnel before the match, though she removed them prior to stepping onto the grass court.

Swiatek, meanwhile, opted for traditional headphones as part of her pre-match preparation.

Both players were making their debut in a Wimbledon singles final, yet McEnroe felt their use of audio devices prevented them from properly savouring the build-up to one of tennis's most prestigious occasions.

Swiatek, meanwhile, admitted before the clash she was pleased with her displays at the tournament this year.

"Honestly I never even dreamt it was going to be possible for me to play in the final," she said.

"I'm just super excited. I thought I experienced everything on the court but I didn't experience playing well on grass.

"I feel confident and I'm just going for it. For sure it's working."

She added: "I think I'm not going to have seasons where the pressure is not going to be kind of forced on me from the expectations from the outside anymore.

"Every year it's kind of the same, but I feel sometimes I can handle it better or ignore it. I think it's easier if you haven't won Roland Garros and also if you had more time to practice."

As for Anisimova, the American expressed her pride in reaching the final after overcoming world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka last time out.

“I feel amazing," she said after that win.

“I mean, it’s so exciting to be in the final here. I think I still can’t believe it in a way. [Sabalenka] is such a tough player. I knew that I had to really dig deep and make as little mistakes as possible.

"I feel like we really fought out there today. The conditions weren’t easy.”
