Sir Keir Starmer's plan to recognise Palestine has been plunged into uncertainty after No10 refused to say if the Prime Minister would push ahead with his proposal while Hamas controls the Strip.

A No10 spokesman said: "We’ve been very clear that Hamas can have no role in the future governments of Gaza … We’ve also been clear that they must disarm, must release all the hostages.

"We’ve also been clear that Hamas are not the Palestinian people, and it is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to have recognition along the lines and the steps that we’ve previously set out.

"We’ve also been very clear it cannot be in the hands of Hamas, a terrorist group, to have a veto over recognition of Palestine."

He added: "Alongside that, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached new depths, and that's why we're doing everything we can to end the suffering and change the situation on the ground.

"We've been very clear that Hamas must release all hostages unconditionally… that's been a long-standing demand. with regards to recognition we've been clear we'll make an assessment ahead of the UN General Assembly on how far the parties have met the steps that we’ve set out.

"And that of course includes Hamas, and no one side will have a veto on recognition through their actions or inactions."

The Prime Minister last week set out his proposal to recognise a Palestinian state.

Starmer urged Israel to agree to a ceasefire, allow the United Nations to restart the supply of aid, make clear that there will be no annexations in the West Bank and commit to a long-term sustainable peace plan based on a two-state solution.

Kemi Badenoch slams Nigel Farage for not backing ban on trans women being placed in women's prisons

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has fired at Nigel Farage for his stance on trans women being placed in women's prisons.

It comes after the Reform UK leader, in a press conference today, failed to answer whether he agreed with an earlier take by new adviser Vanessa Frake on not supporting a blanket ban on trans women in women's prisons.

He said: "I personally have never worked in a prison, so I can't answer it".

Farage said Frake had worked in prisons at the highest level.

The new adviser said everyone in prison "deserves to be treated with humanity and decency".

"That includes female prisoners and it includes trans prisoners," he added.

Badenoch posted on X with a clip of Farage's answer, saying "a reminder that Conservatives are the ONLY party standing up for women-only spaces".

"After the Supreme Court judgment, we shouldn’t be hearing anymore about men being put in women’s prisons," she added.

"Yet here we are. As usual, Reform have not done their homework and will make a big mess."

New Reform UK adviser disagrees with Nigel Farage and Sarah Pochin's female officer comments

Former prison governor turned Reform UK adviser, Vanessa Frake, has disagreed with comments her colleagues made downplaying female officers.

It comes after Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said he wanted people to feel intimidated by police officers along with Reform MP and justice spokesperson Sarah Pochin telling the BBC that "I never feel comfortable actually seeing two female officers together".

"I'd much rather see a great big strapping male officer with a female," she added.

However, Times Radio asked if Frake agreed with those comments.

"I disagree," she said.

"I've seen police officers and I've seen prison officers, females. And, you know, that's Nigel's opinion."

Frake said that she wasn't always going to agree with Farage and that the party's leader may not always agree with her.

'Unsustainable!' OBR official warns migrant crisis creates 'serious problems' for public services and living standards

The migrant crisis is causing "serious problems" for both public services and living standards, an official from the Office for Budget Responsibility has warned.

David Miles, an executive at the OBR, urged Labour to instead prioritise getting Britons back to work instead of relying on overseas workers to grow the economy.

Miles added: “The higher population route to fiscal sustainability by slowing the ageing of the population is uncertain.

"Today’s young people are tomorrow’s old people, so fiscal benefits fade.

"And the rise in the population needed to completely offset ageing in demographic structure is very great and gets bigger over time. It could not be sustained."

WATCH NOW: Reform prison tsar says trans cases should be assessed 'on an individual basis'

No10 refuses to say if Keir Starmer will recognise Palestine while Hamas holds power

No10 has refused to categorically say if Sir Keir Starmer will recognise Palestine while Hamas holds the Strip.

The Prime Minister's spokesman said: "The Prime Minister has been absolutely clear that on October 7, Hamas perpetrated the worst massacre in Israel’s history.

"Every day since then that horror has continued… as the Foreign Secretary said over the weekend, Hamas are rightly pariahs who can have no role in Gaza's future."

Nigel Farage's new prisons tsar opens door to trans women being placed in female prisons

Transgender criminals could be placed on female prison wings following case-by-case assessments, Nigel Farage's new prisons tsar has claimed.

Vanessa Frake, who served as prisoner governor of Wormwood Scrubs and oversaw the detention of Rose West, argued that placing trans women in female prisons should be considered on an "individual basis".

Speaking at Reform UK's major crime announcement in Westminster, Frake said: "We all know what the law is, I'm not going to go back over that yet again.

"But, to my mind, everybody who is in prison deserves to be treated with humanity and decency: that includes female prisoners and it includes trans prisoners."

Labour responds to Nigel Farage's press conference

Following Nigel Farage's press conference, a Labour Party spokesman said: “Nigel Farage offers anger, but no answers.

“It’s farcical that Farage can’t say what his policies are, how much they would cost, or how they would even work. Reform aren’t serious and don’t have a clue as to how they would address the challenges facing working people.

“If Reform really wanted to crack down on crime, their MPs should have backed Labour’s tough new laws to introduce stronger sentences for grooming offenders, mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse, and stricter penalties for antisocial behaviour.

"While Farage shouts from the sidelines, Labour is taking the tough action needed to make our streets safer.”

Nigel Farage slaps down Jess Phillips's Jimmy Savile jibe - 'Gutter politics!'

Nigel Farage has slapped down Jess Phillips's comments in The Times which yet again claimed the Reform UK leader would be on the side of prolific paedophile Jimmy Savile.

He said: "For all the Government's talk about protecting children, which they claim is the sole purpose of the Online Safety Act, our criticisms of that and the impositions on free speech that it has imposed, just in its first week of operation, have led to them sinking to the depths, I would suggest that comparisons that somehow we're siding with Jimmy Savile were wholly inappropriate in every way."

Farage also accused Phillips of making an "inappropriate comparison" and "sinking to the gutter of politics".

Reform UK enlists ANOTHER Tory defector ahead of major crime speech

Nigel Farage has unveiled Leicestershire Police & Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews as the latest Tory to defect to Reform UK.

Matthews, who served as a Tory MEP from 2017 to 2019, blasted Kemi Badenoch and her new Shadow Housing Secretary James Cleverly.

He instead insisted that Badenoch missed "her chance to set the Conservative Party course for the future".

Matthews, who penned his extraterrestrial book Alien Encounters in 2007, added: "To put together a dynamic team to make the changes that this country needs.

"Instead, she brought back a man who can't even commit to leaving the ECHR."

Pointing at Farage, Matthews insisted that there is a "better option right over there".

Nigel Farage insists there is 'rising public anger' in UK as Reform's lawless Britain campaign continues

Nigel Farage has insisted that there is "rising public anger" in the UK as the Reform UK leader continues with his lawless Britain campaign.

"What is beyond doubt is there is a very strong and growing perception in the country that something is wrong," Farage said.

"All the way through from policing on the streets, right through the courts and all the way to the prison system."

He added this issue is now about "the safety of women and children", rather than one of "fairness".

Deputy First Minister to stand down as MSP

Kate ForbesKate Forbes | GETTY

Scotland's Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes has confirmed she will not seek re-election in next year's Holyrood election.

In a letter to First Minister John Swinney, the Highlands SNP MSP said: "I am in no doubt about the scale of my duties as a local representative, an activist and campaigner, and a Government minister.

"Quite rightly this job entails long days far from home, constant attention and total dedication."

'Trans women are women!' Labour MPs revolt against Keir Starmer's support for Supreme Court gender ruling

A growing number of Labour MPs have voiced their frustrations with the Supreme Court three months after judges ruled that transgender women are not legally women.

Britain’s highest court found that sex in equality law refers only to biological sex, making a clear distinction between women and transgender women.

Sir Keir Starmer, who had previously said that “99.9 per cent of women don’t have a penis”, hailed the judgement for providing “clarity” that “a woman is an adult female”.

However, Work & Pensions Minister Andrew Western told one of his constituents that he felt the case was “completely unnecessary” and he appreciated “the fear and distress that has resulted” from it.

Liz Truss fires back at Kemi Badenoch in blue-on-blue economy row

Liz TrussLiz Truss | PA

Ex-Prime Minister Liz Truss has fired back against Kemi Badenoch as a blue-on-blue row erupts over the Conservative Party's handling of the economy.

Writing for The Telegraph, Truss warned: “It is disappointing that instead of serious thinking like this, Kemi Badenoch is instead repeating spurious narratives.

“I suspect she is doing this to divert from the real failures of 14 years of Conservative government in which her supporters are particularly implicated.

“It was a fatal mistake not to repeal Labour legislation like the Human Rights Act because the modernisers wanted to be the ‘heirs to Blair’.

“Huge damage was done to our liberties through draconian lockdowns and enforcement championed by Michael Gove and Dominic Cummings.

“The economy was wrecked with profligate Covid spending by Sunak. The huge increase in immigration has been a disaster.”

Truss's comments come after Badenoch accused Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves of making "even bigger mistakes" than Truss had during her mini-budget.

Reform UK to unveil ex-Wormwood Scrubs governor as justice tsar

Reform UK will unveil ex-Wormwood Scrubs prison governor Vanessa Frake MBE as the party's new justice adviser.

Frake, who joins Reform UK shortly after the detective who led Scotland Yard's efforts to catch prolific killer Levi Bellfield, will appear alongside Reform UK leader Nigel Farage later this morning.

When asked this morning about whether she was willing to have "difficult conversations" with Farage, Frake told Times Radio: “He might have his own views but he will listen far more than any other party has listened in the past.”

Yvette Cooper announces £100m border boost as Labour ramps up efforts to crackdown on migrant crisis

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced an £100million boost to Britain's border security.

The investment will directly support the Anglo-French "one in, one out" returns pilot scheme.

Cooper claimed that the new funding will "strengthen" the Government's "serious and comprehensive plan" to dismantle the business model of criminal gangs smuggling migrants across the Channel.

However, the Tories argued that the cash injection will make "no real difference".

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp labelled the move a "gimmick" and a "desperate grab for headlines".
