WATCH: Top left-wing journalists deliver verdict on who will succeed Keir Starmer
Angela Rayner has the best chance of succeeding Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader, according to two leading left of centre journalists.
Interviewed for today's Chopper's Political Podcast, George Easton, from the New Statesman, and John Rentoul, from the Independent, both tipped Rayner for the leadership.
There has been speculation that Starmer, 60, might not stand down as leader after a bruising first year as Prime Minister.
Interviewed by GB News' Political Editor Christopher Hope last month in Albania, Starmer refused to say he would be leader the next election.
He later clarified that would be leader and hoped to lead the party for 10 years. On the podcast, Eaton and Rentoul had considered five candidates to replace Starmer: Health Secretary Streeting, Housing secretary and Deputy leader Angela Rayner, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham.
Asked to say which one would replace Starmer, Eaton said: "Angela Rayner has the best chance at the moment."
Rentoul added: "I agree with that. She's the really serious politician among that lot, and she has a lot of support among party members. She's very popular and she's the one to beat."
