Sir Keir Starmer is set to deny Britain's Armed Forces the desperately needed cash in a crushing blow to the new Defence Secretary.
John Healey quit the top job on Thursday as he hit out at the Prime Minister and his Chancellor over the lack of funds being funnelled into defence amid scaling international tensions.
When Dan Jarvis was catapulted into the Ministry of Defence nine hours after the surprise resignation, Sir Keir promised defences would have “what they need”.
Despite Mr Jarvis spending his weekend sifting through the Defence Investment Plan with top aides ahead of challenging Downing Street and the Treasury, the Prime Minister is not expected to budge on the £13.5billion already allocated.
Shadow Communities Secretary James Cleverly slated the new Defence Secretary, adding that "he took the job knowing he would be humiliated immediately".
Mr Cleverly said: "He will now have to go to Nato with no credibility, not enough money, and everyone knowing he is just a Treasury puppet."
The new Defence Secretary is instead expected to scrounge for any extra funds from his own department, The Telegraph revealed.
Last week, it was said that Energy Secretary Ed Miliband snubbed Sir Keir’s plea to cut spending to fund defence.
