Mark Littlewood, director general of the Institute of Economic Affairs, has revealed that he has been turned down for a peerage by a House of Lords committee.

The economist, who backed the plans of former Prime Minister Liz Truss, said he wouldn't be surprised if he had been "cancelled" because of his political views.

He told GB News: “The Lords work in very mysterious ways. I've spent my entire adult life very successfully, if I may say so, irritating and infuriating the political establishment so I'd be wholly unsurprised if I'm cancelled.

“There’s this mysterious committee called HOLAC. The Bible says the Lord works in mysterious ways. Trust me, the House of Lords works in even more mysterious ways.

“I’ve always been persona non grata in many corridors of power.”

Asked by Camilla Tominey if he would be getting a peerage, he said: “You know what? I guess not. It means I’m going to have to work for a living.”
