The Prime Minister is hinting at slashing taxes as the economy heads in the ‘right direction’ amid a turbulent few years

Labour will need to enforce a tax raid to fill its “green black hole”, senior Tories have warned.

Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho accused Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer of “taking families and the country for fools” over his new climate spending plan.

She also slammed Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves after Labour ditched its £28billion-a-year investment pledge.

Labour is now hoping to spend an extra £23.7billion over five years.

The complete package was ditched on Thursday just days after it was labelled “desperately needed”.

Coutinho told The Sun: “Labour claim they’ve got all the same policies as on Tuesday, but now it’s all somehow cheaper.

“It shows they don’t have a plan, and we know where that ends — higher taxes on hardworking people.”

Tory Party chairman Richard Holden also warned Labour had created a “green black hole” over their eco scheme.

The Conservative backlash came after Rishi Sunak said the economy was “pointing in the right direction” and that the “future is going to be better”.

The Prime Minister added: “Because economic conditions have improved, because the plan is working, you are starting to see mortgage rates come down and we have been able to cut taxes.

“I do believe those pressures are starting to ease and that hopefully over the course of this year we can continue to make even more progress.

“My central pitch is showing progress. Stick with the plan, we can give you peace of mind that the future is going to be better.

“On all these things, not just the economy but across the board.

“The economy, living standards, whether it’s illegal migration, the NHS, how our kids are doing in school. The plans are delivering, change is happening.”

Sunak’s tax-cutting suggestions come ahead of Jeremy Hunt’s Budget in March.

The Prime Minister is expected to hand out some material changes for British voters as the general election will likely be held later this year.

The latest YouGov opinion poll handed Labour a 25-point lead over the Tories.

Reform UK was also breathing down Sunak’s neck as Richard Tice threatens to wreak further havoc for the Conservative Party.
