THE UK needs a sober and serious leader like Sir Keir Starmer following years of chaos under the Conservatives, according to Labour’s Pat McFadden.

His comments follow warnings about a Labour super-majority and the publication of a new GB News opinion poll showing it 20 points ahead - and Reform UK just 2 points behind the Tories.

Labour’s National Campaign Co-ordinator said on GB News: “I'm one of the few people probably around the Labour Party who was there in 1997. I travelled every day with Tony Blair…it’s different times

“After the chaos that we've had, over the past few years - five Prime Ministers, seven Chancellors, all the changes in policy, this sort of mad mini budget that we had to put up everybody's mortgages.

“A sober, serious leader is exactly what the country needs right now. I don't think he's trying to be in the entertainment business.

“He's trying to be a sober, serious leader. And that's what he'll be if he's elected on 4 July.”

On Starmer’s previous support for Jeremy Corbyn, he said: “I've been a Labour MP for 19 years under different leaders and the point I'd make is that all of our major political parties, my party, the Labour Party, the Conservative Party too, they're not owned by the leaders.

“They’re bigger than the leaders. Every leader of a political party is standing on the shoulders of others, and there would have been leaders I've supported and leaders I’ve not supported so much.”

Asked about the party’s manifesto launch today, he said: “It's our plan to change the country. It's an exciting day for us in the campaign.

“When you are asking for people's support, they want to know your manifesto. They want to know what you're going to do and that's the document that we are publishing this morning and it was set out a responsible, costed plan to change the country.”
