Robert Jenrick has branded Sir Keir Starmer a "sorry excuse for a leader" in a scathing attack on the Prime Minister.

The Shadow Justice Secretary marked his keynote Conservative Party conference speech by delivering a full-throttled attack on the Labour leader.

"He's proven himself to be a freebie-grabbing, free speech stifling, criminal-releasing, tax-raising, farmer-hating, Brexit-betraying, sorry excuse for a leader”, he told party delegates.

Mr Jenrick jokingly compared the Prime Minister to Mr Bean and David Brent while also raising a more serious point about his decision to hand Lord Peter Mandelson a top role in his administration.

Lord Mandelson, who Sir Keir made Ambassador to the US, was forced to resign in shame over his links to disgraced paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Mr Jenrick also criticised the Prime Minister's decision to make Lord Hermer his Attorney General, pointing to Mr Hermer's previous association with ex-Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams.

"Shame on him, and shame on the man who appointed him", Mr Jenrick said in a moment that drew loud ovation from those present in the Manchester hall.

Economy faces 'devastating' 50% tariffs from EU as Keir Starmer confirms 'UK is in discussions'

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed the UK Government is "in discussions" with the European Union after the economic bloc announced plans to implement 50 per cent on steel, which could threaten British industry.

The EU is planning to match tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump as global trade wars continue to heat up with UK steel industry representatives describing the potential levy as "devastating".

During a trade mission to India, Mr Starmer was asked if he believed the EU would continue with its plans.

James Cleverly refuses to rule out bid to be Conservative mayoral candidate in London

Shadow Housing Secretary James Cleverly said he is "thinking about" campaigning to be the Conservative candidate for London Mayor in 2028.

While he said he was committed to his role as the MP for the Essex town of Braintree, he admitted that he was attracted by the prospect of the London job to take over from Sir Sadiq Khan.

He told the BBC: "The mayor of big cities like London is an incredibly important job.

"We’ve already discussed the huge difference that Andy Street made to Birmingham and the West Midlands.

"Look, I love being the mayor for Braintree [ie, MP for Braintree]. I’ve had so many people say, you, you cut your teeth in London politics. It’s a really, really important job.

"My heart is in Essex, but I also know watching London go wrong angers me enormously.

When pressed, he said: "Look I’d be stupid not to think about it, but I say my heart, my heart’s in Essex."

Greens say Conservatives are 'quickening their pace towards oblivion' in scathing attack

The Green Party has claimed the Conservatives are "quickening their pace towards oblivion" as they took aim at the Tories.

Deputy Leader Mothin Ali said: "The announcements from Kemi Badenoch’s Conservative Party so far show the Tories are looking to outflank Reform for divisiveness and hatred.

"But they also show a party quickening its pace towards oblivion.

"The package so far, turbo charged welfare cuts, draconian anti-migration measures, and axing life-saving foreign aid, would leave few but the wealthiest unscathed.

"These measures are a cruel attack on the sick and disabled, migrants and asylum seekers, and some of the poorest communities in the world.

"Nastiness is now at the very core of the Conservative Party.

"What a contrast to the vision of hope and bold politics witnessed at our own conference where we reaffirmed our policies to tax wealth fairly, fund public services properly and say unequivocally that refugees are welcome here.”

James Cleverly claims Reform UK are to the left of Jeremy Corbyn

James Cleverly has said he will "never" work in a party with Nigel Farage as he claimed Reform UK are to the left of Jeremy Corbyn and Your Party on economic issues.

He said: "On economic policies, they are well to the left of Corbyn. That is not conservatism, it is not tenable, and it would not be of good service to the British people.

"I would never be in a party with Nigel Farage."

"Might some of these essentially be Islamist Sectarian Members of Parliament? Yes, absolutely. I do not want to see that."

Kemi Badenoch said she would take "a step back" if she thought someone else could "turn our country around", the Conservative leader has said.

The Tory leader said she is "making a sacrifice" by not seeing her children "as much as I would like" right now, but noted that "this job is really important".

"We need to turn our country around, and we're the only party that can deliver that stronger economy and stronger borders that this conference is about.

"If I thought someone else could do it, then I'd be taking a step back. I think that I'm the right person and I'm the best person," she told Times Radio.

Chris Philp dismisses councillor defections adding 'Reform don't have properly though-out ideas'

Chris Philp dismissed the series of councillor defections to Reform UK, which was announced during the Tory party conference.

GETTY

Alistair Campbell praised Nigel Farage for having some "relative success" but said he "wouldn't overstate it" and would be "surprised" if Reform UK is still doing well in the polls in three years.

Mr Campbell told Al Arabiya News: "I think his relative success [Nigel Farage's], and I wouldn't overstate it, he's doing pretty well in the polls at the moment. And he's doing so because he is picking up an awful lot of support from people who are just frankly thinking the Conservatives totally lost the plot, which they did, which is why they got hammered in the last election.

"And he's picking up some support, less than from the Tories, but some support from people who were Labour and wanted more from Labour when they came into power.

"But there's a long way to go to the election. The more Nigel Farage starts to think he could be Prime Minister and the more that the public starts to think that might be a realistic option, the more that the scrutiny and the pressure will be applied, and over three years, I will happily come back and talk to you in three years' time.

"And if he's still soaring in the polls to use your phrase, I'd be surprised. But we'll see."

'Let's take our country back' - Robert Jenrick

Wrapping up his speech, Robert Jenrick pushed members to "take our country back".

He said: "The only choice we have is whether we have the spirit to fight with them. Are we going to quit when the going gets tough? Are we going to dig deep and fight like never before? How long will our battle last? As long as it takes.

"Because Britain, for all its present flaws, is too precious to lose. Let us not see our country's honour fade, let us see our land retain her soul, her pride, her freedom. Conference, every tide turns.

"I can feel Britain's fortunes turning. So let's pick ourselves up, let's dust ourselves down, let's draw on Britain's greatness to make it greater still. Let's fight for a better future, let's build this new order. Let's take our country back."

Robert Jenrick delivers patriotic message - 'We have so much to cherish'

Robert Jenrick has delivered a patriotic message in his speech, saying: "We've got so much to cherish about who we are. Blue remembered hills seen from Black Country towns, big skies over the flat acres of Nottinghamshire, the best farmers, food and drink, beer, in the world, from Aberdeen Angus steaks to Hawkstone lager.

"A love of pubs, our love of animals, the common law, jury trials, a Royal family so admired that they make the most powerful man in the world go weak at the knees.

"A military that has defeated every force on the planet, the roar of the crowd at Twickenham as the Red Roses beat the Canadians, or Chris Woakes, arm in a sling, goes out to bat at the Oval.

"The quiet kindness of our hospice movement, the millions of volunteers whose helping hands and broad shoulders make our society strong. The spirit of builders, of makers, of givers, of doers, of makers. These are the reasons our hearts swell when we think of Britain."

Robert Jenrick says he has 'uncovered dozen of judges' in favour of migrants

The Shadow Justice Secretary said he has "uncovered dozen of judges" in favour of migrants.

Robert Jenrick told the conference: "Today, I've uncovered dozens of judges with links to open borders charities who take to social media to broadcast their open borders views, who spent their whole careers fighting to keep illegal migrants in this country.

"Some even continue to do so, whilst, astonishingly, serving as judges. It's like finding out halfway through a football match that the ref is actually a season ticket holder for the other side.

"The public rightly ask how independent are they. They dishonour generations of independent jurists who came before them, and they undermine the people's trust in the law itself. Judges who blur the line between adjudication and activism can have no place in our justice system."

Robert Jenrick compares Lord Hermer to mafia lawyer

Robert Jenrick has attacked Sir Keir Starmer's friend and attorney general, Lord Hermer.

He said: "Like one of those infamous mafia lawyers of yesteryear, Hermer always chose a particular type of client, Shamima Begum, Osama bin Laden's right-hand man, terrorists involved in 7/7.

"Since taking office, the advice we're told Lord Hermer has given to Starmer and his cronies, like to give away the Chagos islands to an ally of China, and to pay billions of pounds for the privilege - in each and every one of these incidents, he's wasted no time establishing himself as a useful idiot for our enemies.

"His rise symbolises the central truth of Keir Starmer's Government - Labour is just not on Britain's side."

Robert Jenrick recalled the 1996 Manchester bombing by the IRA.

He said the last Tory Government passed laws to protect Northern Ireland veterans, but now Labour "want to repeal our Legacy Act."

'I'm fed up with platitudes - we've had enough' - Robert Jenrick comments on synagogue terror attack

Robert Jenrick said he is "fed up with platitudes" following the synagogue terror attack in Manchester.

He stated: "In all seriousness, it is great to be here in Manchester, in the proud historic city of Manchester. A city that has given our country so much but has also suffered great tragedy, most recently last week when Heaton Park Synagogue was attacked.

"It was an attack on all of us, thoughts and prayers, yes, absolutely. But I don't know about you, but I'm fed up with platitudes. We've had enough of those, haven't we? I believe in justice and action.

"Whilst other parties have waxed and waned I am so proud that our party, the Conservative Party, has always stood with our Jewish community and under Kemi's leadership I know we always will.

Chris Philp vowed "to end the madness" of the policing of social media.

He said: "It is time to end the madness of the police showing up on someone's doorstep because they have offended someone online.

"The police should catch real criminals, not off-colour tweets. Policing non-criminal social media posts is a catastrophic waste of time, and it tramples on free speech.

"In Government, we would end this nonsense, and we will abolish non-crime hate incidents, so you can tweet away. There is no room in policing for politically correct posturing."

'Not racist to control our borders' - Chris Philp

Chris Philp stated that it is "not racist to control our borders" as he vowed to stop Labour's "weak gimmicks".

He said: "Labour has lost control of our borders and they are not fit to govern. And Keir Starmer has been saying for decades that calling for border control is somehow racist. We have seen him smear campaigners as 'far-Right' for demanding the very inquiry into rape gangs he was finally forced into agreeing.

"His Government even instructed lawyers to argue that the rights of illegal immigrants were more important than the rights of people in places like Epping, it's disgusting.

"Well, I'm here to say border control is not racist, standing up for rape gang victims is not far-Right, and if Keir Starmer won't stand up for Britain then this Conservative Party will."

Chris Philp warns that the nation will 'fracture and break' without a 'common identity'

Chris Philp has warned that the nation will "fracture and break" if it goes on without a "common identity".

He said: "Over a million people speak little or no English. In one East London borough, a shocking 73 per cent of children do not speak English as their first language.

"For some nationalities, workforce participation, especially for women, is pitifully low and Afghan nationals, men, are 22 times more likely to commit a sexual offence.

"We can't carry on like this - a nation that is not united by common values and a common identity will fracture and break."

Chris Philp accuses Reform of only offering slogans

Chris Philp said Reform UK only offer "simple slogans with no substance, scribbled in the pub on the back of a fag packet".

He said, "We must show we have the right principles and the right plan. If we apply Conservative principles with courage and conviction, I know our country will be strong, prosperous, and safe again and that our best days still lie ahead.

"And that's why I'm proud to be a Conservative. As a south London grammar school boy, I believe in opportunity, having studied physics at university, I believe in practical solutions which actually work, and before parliament, I set up and run several businesses."

Shadow Home Secretary lays into Sir Keir Starmer and accuses him over lying his way into No10

Chris Philp has accused Sir Keir Starmer of lying his way into power.

He said: "The Home Office is a tough department but I'll be honest, I did not expect to be on my second opposite number already. When Keir Starmer talks about a one in one out policy, it turns out he didn't mean illegal immigrants, he meant home secretaries.

"And it's not just the Home Secretary. In the last reshuffle, the Prime Minister removed more ministers from the Home Office than he has illegal immigrants back to France.

"Now let's start with a simple fact. Keir Starmer lied to get power. He lied to the Labour Party about what he believed in, he lied to the country about what he would do, and he lied to himself that he was up to the job. No wonder Labour spent their conference planning to replace Keir Starmer, who believes nothing, with Andy Burnham, who apparently believes anything."

Robert Jenrick said he wants to have an "open and honest" conversation about integration in the UK.

"I want to live in a country which is well integrated. I want people to be living side-by-side. I never want to see segregated or even ghettoised communities.

"We want people of all skin colours, of all religions, to be living in harmonious, well-integrated communities with our kids growing up alongside each other.

"And I'm afraid in certain parts of the country, there are communities where that just isn't the case, and parts of Handsworth in Birmingham, where I was earlier in the year, a place I know quite well, growing up in the West Midlands, just don't resemble that. That makes me very worried," he told Sky News.

Kemi Badenoch tells pro-Palestine protesters they are 'doing the wrong thing' demonstrating today

Kemi Badenoch told pro-Palestine protesters, "You are doing the wrong thing," demonstrating today on the anniversary of the October 7 attack.

"This does not help Palestinians; this is creating a climate of fear just two days after we saw Jews slaughtered by anti-Semitic hate."

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp echoed his leader's thoughts, saying: "Students should not be marching on this anniversary of the October 7 massacre.

"It is disrespectful and potentially intimidating to the UK's Jewish community - especially after last week's appalling terror attack in Manchester.

"Anyone at these marches expressing antisemitism or support for terror or extremism who is not a British citizen should be deported. The Government must send a zero-tolerance message with actions, not just words."

Sir Keir Starmer condemns 'un-British' Palestine protesters on October 7

Sir Keir Starmer has hit out at "un-British" pro-Palestine protestors in a message on the second anniversary of Hamas's October 7 terrorist attacks.

The Prime Minister said: "Today, we mark two years since the horrifying attacks on Israel by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023.

"Time does not diminish the evil we saw that day. The worst attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. The brutal, cold-blooded torture and murder of Jews in their own homes. And the taking of hostages, including British citizens, some of whom remain in Gaza today.

"Since that awful day, so many have endured a living nightmare. When I spoke with some of the families of the British hostages, I promised them in person that we will not cease in our efforts to bring their loved ones home."

The terrorist massacre saw 1,200 people slaughtered and 251 civilians taken into captivity in Gaza in the largest attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has urged students to "pause" and "show some humanity", after a string of protests is expected at universities later today, two years on from the October 7 attacks in southern Israel.

"There is, of course, within our country, the fundamental right to protest. It's a cornerstone of our democracy.

"But my message is that, as we remember the awful atrocities that took place two years ago on October 7, I would just encourage those considering taking part in protests to pause, to reflect and to understand the deep sense of loss that many people in our country will be experiencing today, not least given the appalling attacks we saw at Manchester last week.

"So my message is that whilst you might have the right to protest, I would urge people to show some humanity, to show some respect and to understand the deep sense of grief and loss that many Jewish people in our country will be experiencing today," the Education Secretary told Sky News.
