Former Conservative Minister Dame Jackie Doyle-Price says that Joe Biden risks being remembered for his mistakes over his achievements

Growing up in the 1980s, at the height of the Cold War, we were all acutely aware that whoever led the United States was the last guarantor of our freedoms.

The threat of nuclear war was real. The leadership shown by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher in reaching out to Mikhail Gorbachev was incredible statesmanship.

Russia today though is as big a threat to our freedoms as ever it was. And we need real leadership so that we can stand against President Putin.

We are all in admiration of President Zelenskyy. But he is fighting a long war. And whilst we and our allies have given him support, we must remain steadfast in our resolve. Defending freedom is not a choice. It is something we absolutely must do. It remains true that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

And this is why the US Presidential election is so important to us here in the UK and across the world.

The last week has been painful to witness. President Biden has been at the top of US politics for decades and has won affection and respect.

But in misnaming Kamala Harris as Trump and President Zelenskyy as Putin, he risks being remembered for his mistakes rather than his achievements.

If I were President Zelenskyy, I would be less concerned that the President gets his name right than that the arms keep coming.

And this is what really matters. In a dangerous world, we need the US to maintain its commitment to Nato and for it to elect a President that can show leadership to the free world.

The Democrats clearly believe that Joe Biden represents their best chance of defeating Donald Trump. After all, he has done it before.

Donald Trump’s approach to politics has changed the political culture and the political establishment simply doesn’t know how to combat it. And now more than ever.

The scenes from Pennsylvania as Donald Trump escaped an attempted assassination were incredible. Those images will be forever iconic as they show the character and personality of President Trump. Those images will inspire.

Trump’s brand to 'Make America Great Again' is reinforced by his defiance in the face of danger. Biden on current form contrasts poorly.

LATEST OPINION:

In an uncertain world, the people need leadership. We need leaders with the resolve to stand up to aggressors. And we need those aggressors to understand that our leaders have the resolve to stand up to them. Trump sceptics in the UK are looking with despair at the choice being put to US voters.

In truth, I wonder why Joe Biden is having another go. At the age of 81, he has clearly put in a shift. And he will be well aware that he is not as energetic as he once was.

Why on earth would you want to sign up for another term in the biggest job in the world? But such is the nature of politics. Most of us don’t choose to leave the stage. The voters make that choice for us. And there is honour in that. If you are dedicated to public service, you choose to serve until removed by democratic choice.

Or until you realise you are past your sell-by date.

Joe Biden clearly deserves to be remembered for the service he has given rather than the mistakes he has made but the world is simply not that kind.
