A resident of Wethersfield has said the concerns over contamination of the ex-RAF airfield which has been used to house asylum seekers “has been known about for quite a few years."

Speaking on GB News, Dave Price claimed: “I wouldn’t let my dog walk up there. This has been known about for quite a few years now. The Fields Association got an external consultant in to do some work on the site and like many airfields, particularly when the Americans were involved, there was a lot of dumping of stuff when they moved out.

“The Wethersfield base was a major base until Stansted opened, so it's not just radiological waste; There's also concerns about agent orange and some of the other chemicals that are used for degreasing and decontamination of equipment.

“Therefore, it's absolutely no surprise at all that they have got concerns about it: I wouldn't let my dog walk up there.

“[The Home Office] haven't listened to a whole lot of issues. We could have told them before they spent £39 million so far, that the base just wasn't suitable for a whole range of issues, not only the contamination, but also in terms of the state of the power, the state of the water, sewage works, etc.

“And one of the concerning things is, they actually dug down to put in new septic tanks, about ten feet into the soil.

“And again, that was just risking opening up the whole site to contamination.

“It's absolutely appalling, the amount of money that they’ve wasted up there. What happened to the 1900 places? What a waste of public money for what? Absolutely nothing.”
