Rob Bates from the Centre for Migration Control has warned the UK’s immigration and benefits systems are “out of control”, describing the current approach as “lunacy”.

He said spending on Universal Credit for non-citizens has surged to an “eye-watering” level, costing taxpayers billions each year.

The expert claimed around 30 per cent of migrants granted indefinite leave to remain go on to claim benefits — far higher than the rate for British nationals.

He argued the system was designed decades ago and is not equipped to handle mass migration on today’s scale.
