Celebrations are hitting full swing across the world, as the first nations begin to welcome 2026.
Australia and New Zealand are among the first to see in the new year, with thousands already flocking to their festivities for the evening.
It was the island of Kiritimati, in Oceania, that saw the new year first. They are 14 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
This was shortly followed by New Zealand's remote Chatham Island (GMT +13:45).
Britons have been warned to wrap up if they are heading out to watch fireworks, with temperatures barely expected to break freezing as the clock strikes midnight.

Sydney to remember Bondi Beach terror attack victims
Sydney have confirmed they will be honouring the victims of the Bondi Beach terror attack earlier in the month with a minute of silence at 11:00pm local time.
The website for the New Year's Eve display said: "Sydney will pause for one minute to reflect on the tragic Bondi attack.
"The Sydney Harbour Bridge will glow white as a symbol of peace and unity.
"We encourage you to join us by switching on your phone torch and shining a light across the harbour, as a symbol of solidarity with the Jewish community and everyone affected."

As we discussed earlier, Sydney have already seen a spectacular fireworks show.
The family fireworks event, held at 9:00pm local time, gives younger children the chance to see the show before they go to bed - or adults the opportunity to see it twice.

The Liberal Democrat leader, who last week swiped at "right-wing conspiracy theorists" in his Christmas message, used his pre-recorded address to look back on his electoral achievements in 2025.
Speaking opposite the Houses of Parliament beside Westminster Bridge, Sir Ed said: “2025 hasn’t always been easy, but I am so proud of everything our Liberal Democrat team has achieved this year.
“Our record breaking success in the local elections – beating Labour and the Conservatives.

New Zealand has become the first major nation to welcome in the new year as the clock strikes midnight!
Auckland saw in 2026 with a typically spectacular five-minute fireworks show.
According to local reports, the five-minute pyrotechnics show took six months of planning.
Samoa, Tonga and Tokelau have also welcomed in the new year.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has made a stark prediction about the next general election in a rallying call to millions of Britons next year.
Mr Farage, who delivered his 801-word New Year message overlooking the London skyline in Greenwich, set his sights on the 2026 Local Elections and suggested contests slated for May 7 could springboard Reform UK into power.
The Reform UK leader said: "I’ll make this prediction: if Reform win those elections, if we come top, it will put us way ahead of the other parties. Already, we’ve led for 175 opinion polls in a row.
"Our average lead is 10 per cent. If we get this right on May 7 this year, we will go on and win that general election. We will then absolutely have a chance of genuinely, fundamentally, change the whole system of government in Britain."

Thousands of people who have flocked to the iconic Sydney Opera House have already been treated to a spectacular fireworks display.
The "family fireworks", also known as the Country fireworks, are displayed three hours before midnight every year ahead of the main show at midnight.
It marks our first true fireworks show of the day.

The atoll Kiritimati - also known as Christmas Island - has officially become the first place in the world to welcome in 2026!
The Oceania island in the Pacific Ocean, Kiritimati sits 14 hours ahead of the UK.
It was shortly joined by New Zealand's remote Chatham Island (GMT +13:45), who became the second place to celebrate the new year.
The island is home to around 600 people.
