Aidan Swift was jailed for two-and-a-half years, handed a five-year restraining order and banned from owning or keeping dogs for five years

An obsessive thug has killed his girlfriend’s dog after fearing his partner loved the pooch more than him.

Aidan Swift, 42, was “livid” and “irate” when he started kicking two-year-old Chihuahua, Kiki.

The dog was attacked so viciously that it “died on the spot”, Hull Crown Court has been told.

Swift , from Hollym in Holderness, admitted using controlling and coercive behaviour between January 2020 and September 2023.

He also admitted assaulting the woman, causing actual bodily harm, making threats to kill her and causing unnecessary suffering to a dog on April 7 last year.

Prosecutor Matthew Moore-Taylor said the woman had been in a relationship with Swift and they moved in together to Holderness.

Swift was known to punch and slam doors and kick items of clutter when he became frustrated.

Moore-Taylor said: “He was also belligerent, adopting an aggressive tone with her and invading her personal space during arguments.”

He added: “He would often confiscate her phone to prevent her from contacting the police.”

The woman attempted to break up with Swift but he would bombard her with messages until she took him back.

Swift had an argument over the woman’s dog after Kiki fell ill and she went out to collect the pooch.

Moore-Taylor explained: “He was livid, swearing down the telephone, and questioning her about her whereabouts.

“When she arrived home, she was met in the hallway by the defendant, who was irate and accused her of prioritising Kiki over her family.

“He was working himself up and seemed to be repeating himself over and over again.”

Swift later kicked the dog and sent a number of messages trying to pretend what happened was partly her fault.

He separately swung a piece of wood at his girlfriend, hit her on the back and head, causing a large lump.

Swift was arrested after she ended the relationship and police arrested the 42-year-old on September 9.

Mitigating David Godfrey pointed out how Swift admitted to what he did and pleaded guilty during a hearing at Hull Magistrates' Court.

Judge Mark Bury said the woman was “terrified”, adding: “You assaulted her in her own home with a piece of wood and threatened to kill her.”

He also said: "Kiki was only a small dog, but you must have kicked it hard to kill it.

“I simply can't bring myself to express my view about that.

"You will appreciate that I have dogs myself. The way you treated her pet has left me no alternative but to impose a sentence of imprisonment.

“These offences are simply too serious to overlook.

"There are many aspects of your personality that are positive. You are a hardworking man.

“You are well supported by family and friends. You are trying hard to work out your demons."

Swift was jailed for two-and-a-half years and given a five-year restraining order.

A one-year consecutive sentence was also made for Swift’s fatal attack on Kiki.

He has been banned from owning or keeping dogs for five years.

Swift will have to wait for at least three years before he is able to apply for the ban to be lifted.
