More than 150 people replied to the bank's gender pronoun post to tell them they were closing their account

Customers of Halifax have told them they are closing their accounts after its controversial post on pronouns.

The bank shared an image of a name badge of an employee called Gemma, with the pronouns "she, her, hers" printed underneath.

It also captioned the picture with "pronouns matter", which angered a lot of the bank's customers.

In response to critical comments, the bank told people not comfortable with the use of pronouns to close their account, and provided details of the how to do this.

And it appears that people are taking their advice, with more than 150 customers on Twitter telling them they had indeed closed their account.

Writer Gareth Roberts wrote: "Halifax customer since 1988 here. I’m a homosexual man.

"I’m appalled by your adoption of this homophobic, woman-hating claptrap, and by your attitude to customers making perfectly reasonable objections to it."

Another Twitter user added: "Thanks for stating that I may exit my long term savings/mortgage from the Halifax without incurring penalties, if I simply disagree with its values.

"Surprised Head Office sanctioned this concession, but since it's in writing now I'll refer to this when closing my accounts."

While one wrote: "I intend to close my account ASAP."

Explaining the decision to some on twitter, Halifax said: “We want to create a safe and accepting environment that opens the conversation around gender identity.

“We care about our customers and colleagues individual preferences, for us it’s a very simple solution to accidental misgendering.”

The bank also said the option to add pronouns to staff badges was “completely optional.”
