Residents said how police and medics raced to the scene at around 8.30am earlier this morning.

One told EdinburghLive: "I watched it through my window. So many police and ambulances appeared at about 8.30am. It's a quiet area, not much disturbance or police around here usually. I'm so shocked."

Another resident, who did not want to be named told The Scottish Sun: "I heard screams not long after I got up. It seemed unusual but I thought nothing more about it. A while later I heard more sirens and saw armed cops on the street.

"I was told to stay inside and I could heard them shouting a someone. Then there were several gunshots, a dozen maybe, all within a couple of minutes."

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

One nearby resident told Daily Record: "I heard a noise like a door getting rammed. A police car was right in front of our driveway. We heard shots fired soon after. I had gone outside to see what was going on. An officer told me to get inside and my wife to shut the window.

"We heard about eight or more loud shots, it was like firecrackers going off, hard and sharp. Then we saw armed police go in to the house with shields and guns.

"Soon after we saw a man brought out in handcuffs. It was all over quickly, about half an hour. We heard on the police radio that a pensioner had died. It was so scary at the time."
