Flordia Governor Ron DeSantis has said he will not follow any requests to extradite the former president of the United States, Donald Trump.

DeSantis is Trump’s main rival for the 2024 Republican nomination, and the pair have spent much of the run up taking swipes at each other.

But in an act of support, DeSantis has stood with Trump and refused to hand him over and force him out of Florida.

In a tweet, he wrote: "The weaponisation of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head.

“It is un-American.

“The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct. Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent.

“Florida will not assist in an extradition request given the questionable circumstances at issue with this Soros-backed Manhattan prosecutor and his political agenda.”

Florida law dictates that a governor is able to intervene in an extradition if it is contested.

But US constitution rules allow federal courts to overrule their decision.

Trump, a Florida resident, is expected to appear at court in New York next week.

Trump will face an indictment after a grand jury investigation of secret payments to porn star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign.

Daniels claims she had an adulterous affair with the ex-president in 2006 and was paid $130,000 to keep quiet.

Trump has said that he is “completely innocent" and will continue his run to be the 2024 Republican candidate.

He has appealed to supporters to help fund his legal defence.
