Several other drivers say their vehicles have suffered damage after visiting the petrol station

A motorist says he is facing an almost £3,000 bill to repair his car after filling it with the wrong fuel due to a fault at a petrol station.

Graham Stevens visited the Morrisons garage in Tiverton, Devon, on September 26 to fill up his Vauxhall Insignia Estate.

However, he was unaware that the diesel pump he was using was actually dispensing petrol, resulting in extensive damage to his car.

Mr Stevens claims the fuel mishap has left him with an estimated repair cost of £2,800.

The forklift driver told the BBC he noticed a problem with his car when he set off to work the following day and it began "spluttering", before it "eventually died".

The motorist claims Motor Fuel Group (MFG), which operates the petrol station, has admitted to the fuel mix-up but said he has yet to hear from its insurance company, as he had been promised.

"It's appalling. There has been no empathy, no support," he said.

"I was lucky I had £400 in my pocket to get the car going again, but I can't afford the full repair."

Mr Stevens is however, not the only driver complaining of problems with their car after visiting the petrol station, with several other victims having taken to social media to share similar stories.

In a post to Facebook on September 27, an anonymous user wrote: "Has anyone been affected by Morrisons petrol mix-up?

"I don’t think we are the only ones who received diesel from the petrol pump???

"After hours and hours with the AA and fuel drainage company, it seems that several customers will have suffered damage.

"There is an investigation opening, but it would be good if we were working together to resolve this issue!"

In response to the post, one woman said: "Yes, my daughter filled up last night with unleaded, then her car stopped and won't start back up. We have put a claim in with MFG for them to sort it, but she's now without a car and has work on Monday.

"This was about 5.30pm-ish, [the] man in [the] garage said they shut pump eight about 6pm last night, now all pumps have been shut off."

Another Facebook user wrote: "Me too. I’ve got a receipt for £70 diesel and I got unleaded!

"I’ve called MFG and they are going to email me a claim form."

A fourth person said they had encountered the same problem and were forced to "abandon" their car at the side of the ride when it wouldn't start up.

"Filled up a whole tank pretty much," the man commented.

MFG has declined to comment.
