The journalist's comments where slammed as 'fake news' by fellow panelist Emily Carver

GB News presenter Dan Wootton clashed with journalist Benjamin Butterworth, in the wake of Boris Johnson's confidence vote.

The panel, which also consisted of journalist Carole Malone and Head of Media for IEA, Emily Carver, discussed the vote which resulted in an unconvincing win for the Prime Minister.

Mr Butterworth outlined his views on the topic, exclaiming: "Decent Conservative voters who lent Boris Johnson their support in 2019 deserve better than this man."

When asked if he would prefer Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister, Mr Butterworth added: "I'd rather someone who in your words is holier than thou, than a bloke who stood up in front of his own MPs today and asked about those breached leaving parties said: 'I'd do it again.'"

Ms Carver swiftly interrupted Mr Butterworth stating how his comments were "fake news".

In an earlier tweet, journalist Patrick Maguire wrote: "Asked about the conduct described in the Sue Gray report, Boris Johnson told MPs: 'I'd do it again.'"

He followed his tweet with clarification of the comment adding: "Senior Conservative source says PM told Mark Harper he would thank staff again for their hard work."

Dan retaliated to Mr Butterworth's claim, stating: "Benjamin you've got to stick to the facts.

"Boris Johnson did break the law, he received a fixed penalty notice for receiving a cake between meetings, during the day, on the day of his birthday in 2020.

"So for you to say anything else was a breach, is factually incorrect, and i think it's very, very important that we stick to the facts."

Mr Butterworth continued: "Apparently it's always someone else's fault, it's the EU's fault, it's the court's fault, Remainer's fault, the media's fault, Sue Gray's fault, the Met's fault, the civil service's fault.

"When will you accept and the Tory MPs that have trotted out to defend him that sometimes in this sense, it's clearly Boris Johnson's fault, and that's why he needs to go as Prime Minister?"

Dan condemned Mr Butterworth for shaming the Prime Minister, adding that he "trusts" the British public to determine who they want as their leader.

Following these comments, Mr Butterworth stated: "Well let's have a general election then, Dan."

The panel continued to clash following Mr Butterworth's comments, with both Ms Malone and Ms Carver attempting to assert their views over Mr Butterworth's.

The discussion follows a confidence vote which took place last night in the House of Commons.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson endured a gruelling day in Westminster, as MPs took to the ballot box to challenge his leadership.

Chairman of the 1922 Committee Sir Graham Brady announced the results just after 9pm, stating: "I can report as returning officer that 359 ballots were cast, no spoilt ballots, that the vote in favour of having confidence in Boris Johnson as leader was 211 votes and a vote against was 148 votes.

“And therefore, I can announce that the parliamentary party does have confidence in Boris Johnson.”
