Canada has become the third G7 country to lay out plans - in the face of fury from Israel and America

Canada has promised to recognise the state of Palestine - just days after Britain did the same.

On Tuesday, Sir Keir Starmer revealed the step would be taken in September unless Israel met a series of conditions.

And late on Wednesday, Canadian counterpart Mark Carney promised a similar move.

He said that Canada recognising the state would be dependent on certain "conditions", including that the Palestinian Authority commits to fundamentally reforming its governance - and to hold general elections next year.

He also vowed that terrorist group Hamas cannot take part in the proposed election.

The Canadian PM said he "condemns the fact Israel has allowed a catastrophe to unfold in Gaza".

Canada has followed the UK in proposing plans to recognise a Palestinian state

After Carney spoke out, an Israeli Foreign Ministry statement blasted: "Israel rejects the statement by the Prime Minister of Canada.

"The change in the position of the Canadian Government at this time is a reward for Hamas and harms the efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and a framework for the release of the hostages."

A White House official, meanwhile, told Reuters: “As the president stated, he would be rewarding Hamas if he recognizes a Palestinian state, and he doesn't think they should be rewarded.

"He is not going to do that. President Trump's focus is on getting people fed [in Gaza]."

THE WEST TURNS ON ISRAEL - LATEST:

Starmer vowed that Britain would recognise Palestine at September's UN General Assembly

The announcement follows Starmer's vow that Britain would recognise Palestine at September's UN General Assembly, contingent on a ceasefire being reached.

The UK's conditions are more detailed than Canada's, however.

The Prime Minister outlined four prerequisites for Israel to prevent Britain's recognition: establishing a Gaza ceasefire, enabling UN humanitarian deliveries, halting the "annexation" of the West Bank, and pursuing a two-state peace framework.

Emily Damari, a British-Israeli citizen held captive for 471 days before her release, argued that the decision to recognise the Middle Eastern territory as a state was "not standing on the right side of history".

While late last night, US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce warned that recognising the state would be a "slap in the face" to the victims of the October 7 massacre.

She said: "It gives one group hope, and that's Hamas.

Benjamin Netanyahu also took aim at Britain, suggesting his country would not follow Starmer's directions.

Though Donald Trump said the UK was "going the same as Macron" but that it was "OK, it doesn't mean I have to agree".

Emmanuel Macron announced last week that France would recognise Palestine as a state, making him the first G7 nation leader to take the step.
