The mother of tragic Brianna Ghey said she is campaigning for child-safe phones for under-16s, as she believes one would have saved her life.

Brianna was murdered in February last year by two 15-year-olds who she thought were her friends. Esther Ghey thinks her life would have been saved if safeguards on viewing social media content had been in force.

Brianna was stabbed 28 times and her killers had viewed online content about torture and murder beforehand.

Esther told GB News: “Children have access to absolutely everything that's in the world now.

“The content that they might access, and the content that they're then fed through the algorithm, it’s kind of radicalising children.”

She said she believes that one of the reasons Brianna was vulnerable was because she was addicted to her phone.

Esther said: “When Brianna was with us, it was a massive argument point in our house. I was worried about what she was accessing online.

“I lost Brianna when she was very young, and I wish that we didn't have all of those arguments. I kind of wish that I had that support as a parent in the first place.”

While it's too late for Brianna, Esther says she will not stop campaigning to make sure it does not happen again.

She said: “She struggled for a couple of years before she passed away. For me that just feels like such a waste of life.

“If I can make things better for all the young people, then I'll keep working in order to do that.”
