Human Rights Lawyer Shoaib Khan has shared his view on the execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith, after the Alabama murderer was given nitrogen gas in the first execution of its kind globally.

Speaking to GB News, he said: "I mean, I think it's absolutely horrific what they're doing. I mean, I think we, you know, we were probably long past the time when we were firstly looking for new novel ways to kill people.

"But secondly, long past the days of gassing people to death, I think it's horrific. Whoever came up with this idea and the way that the courts and the governor and the whole administration, the whole government came together to make this person die in this way. "And I think like you were saying just then, you know, and the eyewitness, I mean, obviously that was the reverend or one of the eyewitnesses and was the reverend who was present at the death.

"And that's what he says was absolutely horrific. And what the administration had been claiming in court and arguing in court for years or months at least, was that would be humane. And he would be unconscious within seconds. He would die within minutes. In fact, you know, he was writhing and struggling in pain for around 4 to 5 minutes and he was in heavy breathing for another 5 minutes. So at least 10 minutes he was conscious and then he, it took about 22 minutes to die, which is absolutely horrific. And like people are predicting, it is torture.

"I don't think the electric chair is a particularly humane method either. The point is, if you are going to have it, at least have it in a scientific way, in a medical way. I mean another thing to remember is, I mean obviously the whole penal system, the criminal justice system in America, so many aspects of it are quite not Barrick, quite inhumane."
