The Government has launched a cash incentive to entice the British public to make greener heating changes

Britons are eligible for home improvement grants worth £6,000 if they swap old heating systems for a greener alternative.

The Government’s boiler upgrade scheme provides the British public with financial aid to replace dated gas, electric and oil heating systems, which increase carbon emissions, with heat pumps that emits fewer fossil fuels.

And the Government is offering cash incentives to entice people into joining the scheme.

The heat pumps come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from air-source heat pumps, air-to-water systems and air-to-air systems.

They also differ in price, with ground source heat pumps starting from £15,000 and going up to £25,000.

Meanwhile air-sourced pumps cost from £8,000 to £14,000 to purchase and install, although prices depend on the size of your home.

The Government will provide up to £6,000 to help cover the cost of a ground-source heat pump, or cough up £5,000 for an air-source one.

And those who live in a rural area could be given up to £5,000 for a biomass boiler, a device that turns wood pellets into power heating and hot water.

Those who use the grant don’t have to pay the Government back, but the money will be given directly to the heat pump installer on the scheme who apply for the payment on the person’s behalf.

However, people will have to cover anything above the amount provided by the authorities out of their own pocket, with prices likely to mirror the costs of installing a traditional gas boiler, ranging from £500 to £1,500.

But although the initial cost of buying and installing a heat pump is expensive, the greener solution can help save around £2,000 on bills.

Only homeowners are eligible for the scheme which is available until 2025, and financing isn’t available for a hybrid heat pump.
