Another major bank has added to its list of existing bank branch closures in a further blow to millions of customers across the UK.
Halifax has confirmed its Surrey Quays Shopping Centre branch will shut its doors on June 2, forming part of a wave of 25 closures the bank has scheduled for next month.
The announcement brings the total number of Halifax branches closing during May and June to 34. According to the bank, reduced customer visits and a significant shift towards digital banking drove the decision.
Halifax stated that most customers now prefer managing their finances online, diminishing demand for the physical location. Prior to finalising the closure, the bank assessed factors including transport connections, internet availability and potential effects on vulnerable customers.

Halifax to close dozens of branch closures month and next
| GETTYHalifax has designated 46 branches across England for permanent closure throughout 2026 and 2027, with the June shutdowns alone accounting for more than half of all sites the bank plans to close over this two-year period.
Customers have been advised to verify whether their local branch is among those affected. The closures coincide with HM Treasury's announcement this week of an independent review examining access to in-person banking services.
The review will be headed by Richard Lloyd, who previously served as the executive director at consumer champion Which?.
Rocio Concha, the director of Policy and Advocacy at Which?, said: "People and communities losing access to face-to-face banking services is a serious problem. Which? research has highlighted the scale of bank branch closures across the UK and the significant impact this is having on communities."

More than one-third of the UK's bank branch network has been axed | GETTY She added: "This announcement shouldn't divert attention from broader proposals in the financial services bill which endanger consumer protection.
"Mooted changes to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) would weaken vital consumer safeguards at a time when many are struggling with financial pressures."
John Howells, CEO of LINK, said: "While more people are comfortable and choosing to use digital payments, the current legislation to protect access to cash has been working well and complements the wider work LINK has been doing for more than a decade to ensure all communities continue to be able to access to cash for free."
He explained that FCA regulations have bolstered existing voluntary agreements between banks, meaning LINK now automatically reviews each location following any branch closure announcement to assess whether additional cash services are needed.
